Memento Mori 02:06 - Aug 21 with 688 views | Davillin | We had a brief discussion on another thread about the "memento mori." This is an ancient device which can take many forms, but reminds us to "remember your mortality." My favourite is from the Roman "triumph" -- a parade/celebration honouring a general who came back to Rome with a great victory, displaying, among other things, his army and his spoils. Riding with him through the Triumph on a chariot was a slave who stood behind him and repeated, "Respice post te. Hominem memento te." "Look behind you. Remember you're only a man." I have three in my life. I mentioned the clock. Photo below. I also used to have the Ace of Spades with a death's head in the middle on my motorcycle helmet -- until I could no longer ride. Then I had it tattooed on my right forearm. I remember the father tattooist [it was a father/son operation] came to look at the design before his son did the needle work. "It's upside-down," said the father. I replied, "It's upside-down for you, but it's on there for me." I also have had for many years a line from Epictetus: "If you will keep death daily before your eyes, you'll never again feel sorry for yourself or want anything too much." It's always on my refrigerator door [as a memento mori, of course], although it has long since been engraved on my mind. Do you have one you'd like to share with us? Photos [please excuse the poor quality of the photos.]: [Post edited 21 Aug 2014 15:09]

Ha ha. I spelled it correctly several times in the post itself. I still have trouble with the Lilliputian text size. I had valiun, so we're equal.

Thanks for the warning, Perchrock. As long as they don't see it as precious . . . .
