Pretty impressive stats, pretty impressive start.

But why doesn't it feel as good as it should?!

I don't want to start a negative thread here because the season is well and truly up and running and we've got a massive chance next Saturday of already stabbing through a big marker in the ground to be in this division next season - the main objective!!

Lots of positives tonight also; youngsters did themselves proud, Carroll looked classy, full backs solid and comfortable on the ball keeping possession, Jazz' best game in a Swans shirt in my opinion and a very classy acquisition in Fede MkII. Gomis also looks a solid buy and in fairness for a big lump has a real good touch and just seems to have that ability to drag the ball away from defenders and keep hold of the ball. In some ways it's a pity Bony is here at the same time as this boy would be our first and only starter - but that's one of those "nice" problems isn't it. Well I hope so.

I'm also happy with our wide men. Routs and Dyer are dyed in the wool Jacks by now and we know exactly what we're going to get; ok they won't always get everything right, but that's just the way it is, typically with a Swans player, but they're absolutely too class for us. Montero has come in and looks a live wire; he does seem to be the type of player that will do as much right as he will get wrong but when you think about our out and out chances tonight he was behind a big percentage of them.

I am a little worried however about the amount of zip and chances we create now. That to me, at this moment in time, is the clear difference between a Laudrup team and a Monk team. We need to create more "zip" in the middle of the park and get the ball in and around the box quicker feeding both our wingers a lot more than we are at the moment.

I am a little concerned with our middle of the park. I really don't want to see any more of Shelvey's Hollywood passes, at least not on such regularity. He needs to mix up his game a lot more and look for more zip, more one-twos and get a lot more energy about us in centre midfield. Ki can be fairly static too and to a lesser degree so is Siggy. I really thought Siggy would look a different class tonight for half hour but he just didn't.

I will look back at the best one half performance I've ever seen from the Swans and that was the absolute demolition of West Brom at home two seasons ago. We could do with having a little look at the style of play and tactics used in that game and look to employ that again, especially at home. We need more pace in the middle, we need more energy and as I keep saying "zip", something's not right with us in this department and if we don't get it right it could have a knock on effect for the next few months.

Onwards and Upwards.

You're all out of time....the past was yours but the future's mine.

Anyway, back on thread (!), another question for answering:

If we agree that the Swans are not firing on all cylinders:

i) Are Swansea currently a team that is picking up points when playing 'badly', which is a good sign for the season ahead as we will only get better; or

ii) Do the 6 points actually paper over the cracks and that we're on for a tough season under a rookie manager.

In our first season in the Premier League, we didn't pick up 3 points (or even a goal!) for quite a few games, but the performances suggested things would pick up. And so it came to pass. You could argue that the 'performances' were better in that first season than the first two games this year. We played more 'the Swansea way'.

The optimist in me leans towards (i). A more robust defence so far this season, coupled with exciting attacking options in Bony, Gomis and Siggy, reinforces that optimism.

But 30+ years of being a Swans supporter (realist?) makes me fear (ii).

Neither of the above, although I'd lean more towards i) if you put a gun to my head. We're by no means playing "badly". We've played well in patches, well enough to win two games one of which, let's not forget, was against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Regardless of how poor they are at the moment, that result is and will alwaysremain one of this club's crowning achievements. We've been under pressure in both of those games, partly because football is game played between two teams which means one team rarely gets things all their own way over the course of 90 minutes, and partly due to some of our own shortcomings which have been documented in this thread. When we've been under pressure, it's often been because our passing's been sloppy and we've given the ball away.

It's an old football cliché that good teams pick up points when not at their best and we've done that admirably in the two league games so far. We'll continue to improve as and when our squad continues to gel and I assume there will be a couple of additions to personnel as well.

We've defended really well in both games but we've played better in previous seasons and lost. At those times we quite rightly took solace in our performance levels. Now we should be embracing the fact that we're winning games that we'd have lost in previous seasons. Also encouraging is that we're showing the balls to tough games out when under pressure and also bouncing back from setbacks within games. That sort of spirit wasn't always evident, especially in the later games under Laudrup when going a goal down early on was akin to a death sentence.

Just to add that I didn't see the Rotherham game so all of the above is based on the games against United and Burnley. The Rotherham game is probably fairly pointless as a "data point" anyway, seeing as it was an almost entirely different starting XI.

While the thread title is (probably deliberately) a bit provocative, that's a very reasonable OP from T2C. It's good to see him moderating his opinion on footballing matters somewhat in the wake of some very positive results so far this season. Absolutely no doubt that we're not the finished article yet, no team is after three games. There are things that need work and I've no doubt that work is ongoing.

I just hope now that we can put the nit picking behind us and stop looking for every excuse to have a dig at Monk. Some of it has been painful to watch it's been no desperate to find something to comment negatively on (I'm not necessarily referring to T2C here).

And as we're in the business of disclaimers on this thread, I'll add one. I have no "personal agenda" against anyone on here, least of all T2C who I've met many times and is a thoroughly nice man.

It ain't "nit-pickiing," Andrew. This tasteless nutcase is wildly insulting and is clearly in need of some psychiatric help. After I finish reading the other posts to date on this thread, I'll reproduce his ravings in one post for you to analyze and you can tell me again that he is "a thoroughly nice man." You are a thoroughly nice man. He's vile.

Substitute the OP for a lesser known username and this thread wouldn't have got to 3 pages.

Comeonyouswans is posting some great and interesting stuff here, and on his website, very similar in nature to this post, but nobody seems to bother with those threads, because they have no beef with him. Strange stuf.

Despite some attempts to disrupt it, it's been a good footballing debate which has sadly been lacking here recently.

Dav, I've met him, I like him, I know he's a decent fella. Exactly the same goes for you too. He clearly has an issue with you on here which has gone on for some time and may have been passed down a generation. I don't blame you for one bit or not liking him given the stuff he aims in your direction. I've been on the wrong end of T2C's online invective too, years ago (and him mine to be fair) but it was a long time ago. But I'm just doing as I always do, speaking as I find (as you are of course).

No I accept that some people can't and that's fine. If I'd had a run in with him (or anyone else for that matter) I'd feel the same.

At least he's been big enough to come on here and say he's impressed with the start, happy with certain things and still highlight some doubts/worries which are ones I'm sure we all share to some degree. Many others wouldn't have done that.

We're all swans fans (mostly) and we all come on here to talk about the club and find out others views on it. Years ago it was one of the only ways to discuss the swans whereas nowadays every tw*t and his postman has an opinion. It's good to come on here and find our what the proper fans think, the ones that we all know were definitely there when things were shit.
