They haven't hijacked it, they've interpreted it. My sisters married to a Pakistani man, a good guy, they have 3 grown up kids. When I listen yo the bolloxs her boys comes out with its frightening. If you think anything but a significant minority justify/sympathise with the young British Muslims out fighting for IS then I think you're wrong.
