Stunning victory for Salmond and the Yes campaign. 07:52 - Sep 19 with 3721 viewstrampie

Huge victory for the Yes campaign, roundabout 45% of the vote, battled against the Beeb, the newspapers, the 3 major Westminster parties and the capitalist bosses threats, what an amazing result for 'Yes'.

The next one is a shoo-in for 'Yes', continued Tory/NuLabour rule from Westminster and the demographics seemed to show the young voted for 'Yes' [up 40 years of age], the old voted for the status quo and they will be dead in the coming years.

Amazing result for 'Yes' against the odds.

As I just said on another thread, Cameron will break his devolution promise, or at least procrastinate on it, which will strengthen the SNP at the next election after some rabble rousing from Salmond, and they'll have another one in a few years.

If it's a choice between upsetting the jocks and upsetting his own party, there really isn't a contest.

There won't be a next one BECAUSE of the size of this yes vote (London will not be caught with it's knickers down again - this was the chance, it really was now or never), but as you say, what an amazing vote and turnout. 45% of the 85% of Scotland wants out. Compare that to the numbers that sustain majority Westminster smegs.

One hell of a bargaining position though, as there would be some fairly bitter civil unrest without 'independence not-very-lite'

It was stunning alright.
Take out Glasgow and its really pretty overwhelming as only 4 voted for yes and most in one would have been half pissed anyway.

Those bleating on about independence and shafting the tories vermin have to realise something . THEY are n the minority even in Scotland hardly a home for conservatism

Many no voters went that way because of the promise of substantial further powers. I'm sure a large part of the argument put to them to vote yes was 'don't trust the Tory buggers'. If the government now go back on their promises, or don't go far enough, huge numbers of no voters will vote yes if there is a next time.

They will never know how close they came to financial Armageddon.
Its key that those in Edinburgh the financial centre and those in the islands voting NO as they don't have the yoke of old labour bitterness.

if NO HAD BEEN VOTED FOR,the stock market would have taken a smashing. Good? well not really because millions of suckers have paid into pensions that are directly linked to the FTSE. It affects us all.

You're wrong there. Scotland is indeed a home of conservatism, or at least has a significant impact on the psyche. The SNP were known as the Tartan Tories not so long ago before completely changing tack. I think it was in the 60's that the Tories got a majority of seats and votes in Scotland.

Thatcher ruined a lot of that of course, although you could probably trace the seeds to the merging of the old Unionist Tory parties with the wider, English, conservatives.

Andrew.
Sorry but the industrial heartlands of Lanark /Glasgow/Dunbarton/Dundee never have remotely Conservative . The Ediinburgh area more conservative and the highlands and islands more independent minded but even these turned their backs on full separation so a clear message there.

Its a great day for our island and you,as an accountant, would be well aware of the possible/probably fiscal meltdown that would affect us both

Yes an amazing result in a vote with only two options. Almost half the people went for one of them while just over half went for the other one. Truly remarkable.

"turned their backs on full separation so a clear message there"

Two and a half years ago the yes vote was at around 28%. If this referendum had come a year later they'd have gone.

So, in twenty or so years time it would have been almost unanimous then...

Love the "stunning victory" angle - a bit like Michael Foot's great "victory for socialism" in the 1983 election...

I suppose Trampie will be along in a minute to tell us that Labour only lost that election because it wasn't left wing enough.

I would have been surprised if 70% of people had voted yes and 70% of people had voted no.

That's an impossible call, and now Westminster knows the true scale of the unrest they will do something about it. Even if it's only paving the way for a future yes vote to lessen the impact on the rest of us.

I was surprisingly happy to hear the result this morning. I had been feeling antagonistic towards them. The thought that they could plunge us all into trouble, could cost us all (them included) a lot of money, jobs and affect pensions, it made me angry.
This morning I was actually ecstatic the majority of them had seen sense.

And will we see the pro independence brigade on here ( yes Kilkenny that means you) who were so sure they'd win, eat some humble pie?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

But an "amazing" victory Loh.
It might be me mind you.

A massive fook off to the bitter and twisted and a clarion call to get together forget the past battles and improve our country.
This country has eschewed old fashioned left wing socialist claptrap and now independence for one of the union members so its shows we have common sense.
