They take their eye off the ball these days when they played without helmets you followed the ball and it was rare to get hit these days its not so rare

RIP Phil Hughes, absolutely awful. A freak occurrence that had such a tragic consequence... Thoughts are with his family but also the bowler, he must be distraught.

Ive watched him play a few times over the past couple of years and have fond memories of my first taste of Big Bash cricket at the Adelaide oval with him batting for the Strikers. He was a very promising batsman and will be a big blow to Aussie cricket. Awfully sad news indeed. RIP Phil.

I can't believe it. RIP

Some heartfelt tributes coming in for Phil. I hope all get the support they need plus Sean Abbott. He must be in pieces.

Awful, awful news. Tragic.

Feel for Sean Abbott too, he must be mortified. Doubt if he'll ever bowl another ball in anger.

Jim's right - helmets give you a false sense of security. Players wouldn't contemplate half these hook shots without them. It always used to be the rib balls that hurt, the really short stuff was avoidable if you were coached to watch the ball and duck or swerve out of the way.

similar thoughts here.
Makes you wonder how its not happened before given the hostility and uncovered pitches of yore.
Larwood Lillee Andy Roberts and Frank Tyson were pretty lethal but as has been mentioned before the fact there were no helmets nor little other real protection made them develop technique to cope.

A shattering tragedy which will be long remembered and thoughts with his family

I hope the support network is there for Sean Abbott as much as it is for the family of Phil Hughes. As Warwick said, I doubt he'd be able to bowl again.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there's been an increase in accidents on ski slopes since helmets became common place - so the false sense of security argument makes sense.

RIP buddy - a sad day for cricket.

RIP

Puts all the "seriousness" afforded to sport in perspective.

Awful, freaky, way to die

Terrible for everyone involved

Its tragic that this young man is cut down in his prime. With that ball flying around, though it was bound to happen some time, and it will happen again. Given the dangers of cricket, its surprising such tragedies are so infrequent

Also I feel for the guy who bowled the ball. This incident will haunt him for the rest of his life.

If you can fill the unforgiving minute. With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
