Are there any other parents out there, or teachers, who are as worried about the way things are going for our schools.
I'm a governor at our kids school and I have seen the cashflow projections for the next 3 years. Our school will have a huge deficit by 2017.
This means of course, job cuts, cuts to extra curricular activities and price rises. Among the things to go will be breakfast club which in our LEA costs around £1,000,000 a year.
There is no way around it as the council has to cut 32 million off it's budget. This of course comes from the Welsh government, who in turn are facing cuts in budget from Westminster.
There are several initiatives which have proved very successful in improving standards that will also (probably) be axed, such as the RWI (reading, writing initiative.
What makes me even more anfry about this, is the promise by Westminster to give Scotland even more money. Currently, Scotland is the best funded (per head) part of the UK. To make Scotland even better off, other regions ( eg,Wales and the North of England) will suffer.
Why do our kids not deserve the same opportunities as the Jocks. My son has been doing really well in school, why should his education be put at risk?
In all honesty, I wish they'd gotten their yes vote and fecked off!! They are now screwing the rest of us over, aided and abetted by a useless Westminster coalition.
The only way to prevent these cuts is for someone to win 100 million plus on the euromillions and give most of it to the council!!

Or sell the Liberty to the Swans. Another way would be to move the staff from the county hall up the the empty offices in Penllergaer and sell the sea front site with the glorious sea views. |  | | |

Because they need criminals to keep the jails running ffs.. poor education for the bottom classes = target them.. the majority of the British criminals are bottom class pupils.. and are all on the mental health register.. another reason why they won't change it.. because it keeps the mental institutions running.. it keeps drug companies running.. it's one big sham.. just so the UK can be a power in a European Union with no actual control over decisions.. which makes the whole sham pointless..
They're giving Scotland money because they don't want another Free Scotland campaign.. in other words.. lose Oil rigs and other big supplies Scotland produces.. that's the only reason..
Think political.. think as a politician business.. Control, people, profit, big business.. that's all they think of the UK workforce.. a profit.. every move a government make is strategic.. |  |

I work in a school that has been edging towards compulsory redundancies for years but luckily have managed with voluntary. I don't think that can last much longer...the budgets are nowhere near enough anymore - there's just about enough staff to fulfill the timetable.
you'll see a lot more merging going on....look at what is happening in Port Talbot! 3 schools into 1

Doing what you say (which I agree with) would only protect the budget for two years. The annual 5% cuts are ongoing. It would just make the third year even more painful.
The only way is for the WAG to get more money from Westminster, or to put more money into education nationally and not spend so much just in Cardiff and it's closest valleys.
As usual though, the rest of Wales will be allowed to suffer while Cardiff prospers. | |

My seven year old has had homework for a grand total of one year at his school. He's had a lot of maths questions, telling time questions. His school had to pay a charity for a scheme called SFA - about reading, writing those kinda basic things.
Wife's family are English, live in England. Her nephews get geography, history homework - nephews being the same age.
My youngest has special needs; he was at the primary school section of the school my eldest is at. The provision made for him? Six different one to one assistants over the year. The majority of the time it was a 19 yr old, whose sole training was to cuddle him. His difficulties mean he's behind - and always will be - but that was an utterly wasted year. Thankfully he's now in a specialist school.
So yeah, tell me how great education is here? | |

My kids went to local primarily schools then grammar schools.
Homework was considerable at both.
It grieves me to see Wales as it is.

Think Education is fecked throughout - got a lot of friends working in schools and also know quite a few headteachers and all who I have spoken to since September are worried about the cuts
All the teachers will then go onto supply where agencies will pay them not enough money and the schools will have no continuity. Seems the only place where there is money available is for 1-2-1 support where required and thats about it.
For anyone in the know, what is so different in England where they seem to have so much more money per pupil - is it directly from the Welsh Government distributing the funding or is it more complicated than that? |  |

This looks good in principal but all the public services (from then central library to housing benefit to blue badge applications etc etc) are dealt with in the civic centre. It was chosen because of it's central location. Moving it out to penllergaer (which is not empty) would not make a lot of sense. Also, as the penllergaer offices are also up for sale I'd assume it would cost the council a lot of money if they sold both civic centre and penllergaer offices and had to move staff and library twice. | | | |

£52 million to buy the white elephant that is Cardiff Airport with a further 10 million going on terminal improvements. Another £13 million loan given to them this November to "attract new airlines". It's going to take a lot more money than that!
There's even a riveting documentary on bbc about it now.
There was significant foreign interest from China and other places to expand Pembrey airport into a thriving passenger and cargo airport. Any news on this or have the assembly killed it through a conflict of interests? | |

Cardiff airports likely a simple choice though, invest or let it close. Every plane I seem to land on there chucks you off at the furthest point from the luggage areas and involves going up a couple of sets of stairs only to come back down the same amount 20 seconds later. Great for all the 'skint' old people on board.
Valley electrification will take 10 minutes off travel time from cardiff to Merthyr apparently. Many of the valley towns, like the High Streets, should be abandoned and razed to the ground.
As much as I'd love to have a major airport at Pembrey, there must be reasons it's not a goer as WAG wouldn't be able to stop it as it'd be Westminster decision Shirley [Post edited 17 Dec 2014 11:58]

No reddy, education is suffering nationally. But the WAG are spending a lot of money on things most of us don't deem to be more important. The Newport bypass, the electrification of railway lines are just two of them. Our schools and the NHS are suffering badly and need more money.
Ultimately, this comes down to Westminster cutting our overall budget. Wales is being starved while Scotland is having a jolly. | |

That's life.. it isn't fair.. just deal with it.. no good moaning.. I'd do that job!.. it's a walk in the park mun.. never mind the 100 days holiday a year and the weekends during term time.. for doing a bit of marking  .. f*ck me.. you teachers have got it all on your plate fair play.. pay ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 or more.. A vote FOR Swansea education from me. We've 2 in a Welsh infant/primary school and the quality of teaching, enthusiasm and dedication of the staff are second to none. Our kids are inspired, enjoy school and generally more inquisitive about the world around them as a result. I believe the Welsh education system generally has a good reputation and constantly outperforms its English equivalents in the league tables on a lower budget per student. Proving that there's more to this teaching lark than the sensationalist headlines about funding would have us believe. |  | | |
