The Stoke hierarchy are due to meet this week to discuss several matters, including their January transfer targets and the futures of Peter Crouch and Whelan. Both players are out of contract at the end of the season and Stoke must decide whether to offer them new deals or try to get rid in January, rather than allowing them to leave for free in the summer. Before he broke a bone in his leg earlier this year, Whelan had been a regular starter under manager Mark Hughes. However, since his return, the 30-year-old has made just two substitute appearances in 10 games. Should Hughes decide he can cope without Whelan then the Republic of Ireland international will not be short of options, with Sunderland, Swansea and Crystal Palace all said to be interested. Swansea are thought to be in the market for a new midfielder and may decide to move for Whelan if they can agree a cut-price fee with the Potters.

Can't see that one happening at all, Monk is always saying that he wants young hungry players with points to prove, so at 30 he doesn't fit that criteria at all, good player when fit though.

Surely the first salvo of speculation we will hear, and there will be many forthcoming over the coming weeks.

However, does anyone think we need an old head in the midfield at times to solidify and make us more combative when those last ten minutes comes round and we chuck games away ?

Maybe Monk does ?
