hy is there so much animosity between crapdif and us 16:53 - Feb 25 with 6949 viewslibertine

there is not the same amount of animosity between us and any other place in Wales and it seems to be that all the other places in wales don't like Cardif, are we all just jealous of them ?

They seem to get everything and we don't

I was talking to one of the guys that runs Newport and he was saying that they support us as the only Welsh PL team

but when crapdiff were up here they did not support them.

there is more to it than football.

Liverpool had a venal bullshitter-Derek HATTON who eventually got found out but not before he d made a very very good living out of conning people and Thatcher gave him m a cause celebre but ,and I met him and Tony Mulhearne ,his hench man ,many times, a bigger arsewipe never walked the earth.

The City, free of the old crap then got the C of C and then things exploded ,for the good.

I fear the people of Swansea seem dispirited by it all and for me the very first thing would be to bin LABOUR councillors

But we had a Lib Dem run council up to the last election (i'm not defending the current lot, just stating a fact).

There's been lots of positive talk since they got rid of David Phillips who I never trusted for some reason. The current Council leader talks well but has only been there a short while. We have to give him a chance because we've got no choice. He's going to be there for a few years whether we like it or not.

He has talked a good game, I hope he delivers. Like I say, there's only so much our councillors can do with no funding from Cardiff's government.

As someone who has lived in London for over 25 years, I can honestly say that some people on this thread are absolutely nuts.

Cardiff is a relatively OK, second class shopping experience. It has the major chains, but not very good versions of them (John Lewis etc etc). But at the end of the day, they are chains and virtually everything that they sell can be easiy bought from the comfort of any Swansea sofa with a connection to the web. It also has an OK bay area and some decent concert halls & the millennium centre.

Swansea is bad for chains. None of the guys like John Lewis have any real interest in setting up shop (largely because they believe that the people from Swansea and surrounding areas that want to shop there only have to travel a short distance to get to the Cardiff store anyway). Same with Ikea etc.

But - Swansea has an excellent variety of independents (in Mumbles for example, or the area around the museum over to SA1 etc). It has surrounding countryside to die for and easily the best bunch of beaches and small seaside villages anywhere in the UK (with the possible exception of Pembrokeshire which is equally lovely).

There are some vibrant, renowned small businesses setting up shop (Toast for example) and the new University development could see a spin off of all sorts of renewable energy and marine based small businesses over the coming decades (in much the same way as Cambridge has seen an explosion of bio tech businesses grow up there).

Swansea has some excellent restaurants, from places like Fairyhill to Patricks and PAs in the Mumbles and small gastropubs dotted around to places like the Bras and those down in SA1.

It is a brilliant city for anyone that enjoys walking, surfing, paddleboarding. coasteering, hiking, sailing or any number of outdoor activities, and also has a vibrant music festival, the Grand, a great market and loads of other things. It has a great Leisure Centre and other stuff like the national pool, the Waterfront Museum and so on as well. There's loads to do around Gower if it's wet as well.

It definitely needs some tarting up in the centre - extreme tarting up in fact, but it has the potential to be one of the great waterfront cities - there aren't actually that many around and very few with the length of beach Swansea has - (I'd like them to look to Barcelona for inspiration - obviously on a lesser scale). And close by as well - what better way to spend a rainy day than a trip to Dan yr Ogof with the kids? Better that than walking round blooming shops for God's sake.

It's easy to knock Swansea for the bad bits, but anyone that honestly would rather spend a week in Cardiff than a week in Swansea / Gower is mad.

Ok Lisa,

how many surf shops in Swansea

10 years ago nucleus, big drop, the one behind the George, Rip Curl, Dave friars and another one up on castle street and fat face.

Now there is not one, why? because the cretinous councillors won't give breaks to small business who are having a difficult time, or wanting to start up, they suck up to big business like maccy D, but when its one of their own, they start getting jealous ," He's aving it right off he hes self employed, im"
My partner had a shop which was in the Independent on Sunday as the "best shop in Swansea", sadly for her things didn't go that well a few things which were out of her control went wrong, she asked the council for a delay on her rates, as the shop was not open.
They were just not interested, thinking she was up to no good ( I don't really know what she could have been doing) result shop closed which then meant 2 shops nearby closed.

All home grown talented businesses, council don't give a damn and it is down to them they make the decisions, councils elsewhere are all about small business especially Cardiff, they look after their own. In fact other Welsh councils talk about our council in a very negative manner.

Cardiff look after Cardiff and so do Swansea!

that may be the case.

I was simply pointing out that Swansea has a lot going for it and to be frank, Cardiff is not actually all that (since all it really is, is a shopping city and speaking as someone who lives in an actual shopping city, Cardiff's just the usual collection of mid market, mass market crap).

I'd love to see breaks being given to small business owners - hopefully that can begin to happen. And all I ever say to people who don't like what they do - stop voting for them and tell them why (council, WG, whoever).

I'd return to Swansea a hell of a lot quicker than ever move to Cardiff.

And Swansea beach is a lot better at the moment than it has been for years.

Lisa,
I've been involved with the green party and would now vote for plaid, I realise that neither are perfect and they've got faults.

the trouble is that most people in Swansea vote Labour, but can't give reason why other than "If you don't vote for them son then the F--ing tories will get in "

Lisa speaks a lot of sense.

There's no serious future in most chain stores IMO. The internet shopping revolution will kill a lot of them off over the next 15-20 years. At best you'll have a few "click and collect" locations, probably run as joint ventures. The only exceptions to this I expect would be food retail and clothing.

The future lies in leisure, hospitality and smaller, specialist outlets. Swansea has a real chance to get ahead of the game here, but I fully expect the council to go down the tired old "shopping centre" route.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Brynmil and the other guy

First, nice to have a post from Bryn-its been along time.

Seriously. YES .

Have I ever lived there. WTF , well before you re born and don't forget it

It follows Ive seen the place with full employment and shops/centre to be proud of.

Beaches ok in the wet?. Better how, having a picnic ruined kids running for cover, beach games curtailed and then catching the bus home soaked to the skin. Yep, that s the reality. Its nice, in a way, to drive to a deserted Middleton PO, park up,then walk to Fall Bay with your loved one hand in hand, wrapped up in Berghaus best rainproofs, but in reality, beaches on Gower in good weather triffic. In bad, like all beaches, nothing more depressing; Look around any sea side resort in the pouring rain and see the bored kids and hapless parents then come back and tell me its better. NEVER.

I see the Liverpoo card played again so ok.. correct many of the estates are dark places ,very dangerous and not n any way lie the urban paradise Swansea is.

Trouble is no fecker goes to these estates unless to shoot some fecker but they go into the CITY which is where they spend their money which provides income for people. Its the same with CARDIFF ..good shops, castle and places to go on the rain.. no tw@t wants to visit Ely ,Llanrumney or whatever they call Splott now.

To end, and to make things clear to you two,we live basically semi rural area surrounded by farms on three sides and the beach 5 minutes away. When fine its great place to be but rain? when wind comes from north west its straight at us and no fecker goes anywhere near the beach apart from the chunts who et their dogs crap on the sands.

When raining, we head 20 mins east to Liverpool for the things a vibrant city brings

Oh and Swansea never leaves your heart

F*ck me Perch.. you'd swear Liverpool was Barcelona where it's sunny everyday.. someone give him a reality pill ffs.. 'Swansea never leaves your heart'.. Q) where you live now Perch? A) Liverpool.. slap yourself in the mirror daily.

The awkward moment when a Welsh Club become the Champions of England.. shh The Swansea Way.. To upset the odds.

Off the top of my head

Hot dog, pjs, the one between Caswell and Bishopston, the one in upper killay, the building dave friars was in (the one by the tiv, not the old one in castle st) still sells surf clothes, it's called pier something, nucleus/big drop on newton road is still there, but always seems to be having a closing down sale. Fat face is still there, Animal in the quadrant (though I appreciate those 2 are chains/franchises). I'm sure there are others.

I don't disagree with your point about the council not supporting small businesses, but I'd imagine the surf clothes market is just over saturated, particularly when they are half the price online.

Liverpool is Liverpool, unique and increasingly vibrant. Swamsea really is on a knife edge. It can take the opportunities such as the University development, something that was a/is a signifant driver of change here. Or it can end up going down the pan. Independent shops and eateries are really important away from the main Liverpool One development which is not a simple 'mal! Like Cardiff has. I just hope the opportunity is not wasted

Ok fair enough there are real surf shops outside of Swansea centre!

there is nothing in Swansea

not even Gringo can survive in Swansea and their directly imported profits are massive.

I know from a personal level and from involvement in the FSB that Swansea council sucks it really does, they hate small business and their own regeneration man thanks the centre is great, I mean what chance have we got.

Other councils let start up businesses have a few years of reduced rent/rates just to try and introduce new business into the area, our council are petty minded jealous tw@s who are deluded into believing that every small business is minted, when in fact most of them are skint.

Then ---------------in the not so distant future Orwells vision will come true every town/city in the world will be the same owned by the super rich, pretending to be all in this together

The two Cities don't compare, equally the surrounding areas don't compare. Swansea has some of the best beach's in Britain in their surrounding areas but Cardiff has the best City, no bias in that just fact. I know the argument on how much money has been spent there but I am not getting in to that.

of course they don't.

That's why I said that for someone living in London (for example) Cardiff is a waste of time since all it has is what London has only on a miles, miles smaller and worse level.

Swansea has something different hence the attraction if you live in a big city.
