Cast your mind back about 6 years ago, when Jordi Gomez was our star man, we wanted and needed him badly but we all (fans and money men) baulked at the £1.8m Espanyol asking price.
To put it in to context we pay £1.75m for a talent from Exeter who has yet yo be proven.

6 years is a long time if football. Gomez went to Wigan for 1.7m, now as you say, we pay 1.75m and chuck the lad in the U21s. Shows how much progress we have made in that time.

There were doubts at the time about his ability to make the step up. Lovely technical skills but way too slow on the ball and easily caught in possession.
Would be a regular at Championship level but rarely more than a squad player at some pretty poor Premier League teams. |  |

Boss the midfield in all four divisions
Captain and lead a team by example
Aggressive, but fair
Win the ball in midfield, and play a subtle pass
Win the ball and drive us forward and score 12 + goals from midfield
Tackle, win possession and utilise it
Head the ball, neck muscles and facial expression had to be experienced first hand, sorry if you never witnessed that grimaced face of Robbie James
Played in other positions to great effect, and at other clubs who voted him player of the year too...and yes even our then greatest rivals up the road voted Robbie James as their Player of the Year... that's how good he was (for a Jack to be recognised as poty by them?)!
