What future for Welsh Labour? 13:25 - Mar 28 with 2553 viewsLohengrin

In town earlier watching the Labour people out and about canvassing I was struck by the fact that they were all over pensionable age, some well beyond. Where have their youngsters gone?

Im not particularly young anymore, but can still relate to the younger generation you mention.

There is absolutely no connection between youngsters and politicians. They cannot and do not relate to them. There is the perception (rightly or wrongly) amongst people that they are unable to influence what goes on politicially and the politicians are a bunch of people on tv who say lots of stuff but are generally full of wind. Younger people can see through the charade far more easily the olders i think and it goes in one ear and out the other. Politics are like pop-up ads..click, get rid, next..

This is nothing new though. Did the youngsters of the 50s and 60s relate to Churchill and McMillan? Those of the 70s to Heath and Wilson? I doubt it. I remember despising Thatcher as a kid during the 80s but mainly because my old man spent pretty much every news bulletin spitting venom at the TV. It wasn't until I was older and she was almost done could I understand for myself the catastrophic damage she did to this country. You can trace the current malaise right back to those days. Why be interested in politics when for a generation we've been told to look out for ourselves only and let wider society and social responsibility can take a jump. Modern Britain with its myriad faults was shaped in those days. Kids these days have no reason to be interested in politics and when you look at what's on offer anyway, who can blame them.

It is kind of understandable that youngsters will say i'm not interested in politics, they never do anything for me so i'm not going to vote.

Looking at it from the other side a cynical politician (there aren't many i'll grant you ) might say, i'm not going to worry about youngsters because most of them don't vote, i'll look after older people instead because most of them DO vote.

Well, if a bunch of these disaffected youngsters were able to organize themselves via the net the possibilities are boundless. Imagine if a young people's spokesperson was able to say to Cameron/Miliband 'i've got a million voters behind me, what are you going to do for us'. The reaction would be very interesting. They certainly wouldn't be ignored.

Very difficult to do of course but the logic is simple.

Maybe the older ones should wise up and realise labour isn't the party of the working classes.

I want to trust them and i need to trust them - but i dont trust them. The strings are pulled from Westminster - and thats a fact. Ed 'one nation' is simply not someone the welsh people can relate to. Its all a bit sad in truth.

There is no monolithic Welsh opinion, Kilkenny. A half hour spent on this board ought to dispel any notion of that.

Where are their youngsters?

Sitting on the dole and applying for jobs that have already been sorted out.. While claiming advertisement revenue..

Sitting on the dole because we all know post code and family entitlement comes first

Sitting on the dole because people keep saying you can't read, write or do anything

Called useless and a lazy person that isn't up to the required standard (even though I'll give Lance Armstrong a run for his money on the cycling machine)

Ill disciplined, rude, repulsive, attitude is appalling,

Authority think I'm a drug dealer and supplier among other things (f*cking dense they are)..

Authority mock me

People openly mock me

The Labour govts Curriculum almost killed me (no joke)..
Authority almost killed me (no joke)

Dr Winston doesn't even want me to work I don't think..

It doesn't matter who's in charge.. People don't give a f*ck.

The awkward moment when a Welsh Club become the Champions of England.. shh The Swansea Way.. To upset the odds.

What's the future for Welsh Labour? Simple, they'll remain in power for the foreseeable future, unless of course, Wales takes a turn like the Scots and become increasingly nationalistic and elect a nationalist government. Welsh Labour will continue to centralise wealth in Cardiff in a way that would've impressed even Thatcher. People will continue to blame the plight of Wales on England, despite the fact that many of our services are indeed devolved. Cardiff will continue to grow and thrive and be given golden handouts for every project imaginable, whereas funding to the rest of Wales will continue to be squeezed. People will vote for Welsh Labour because they always have, not because they do any good for Wales, certainly not outside of their capital.

Swansea centre last month, Tramp; although I've since seen Labour people out in both Port Talbot and Neath and it was the same story there, mostly pensioners.

This was in the day mind you so it's possible that their active younger membership was at work, but I can't say as I've encountered any particular enthusiasm for Labour amongst anybody younger than myself I've spoken to.

EDIT: My eldest daughter and her friends seem rather taken with The Greens, that's adolescent idealism for you...

The Labour woman campaigning in Neath is well into her 60's by the looks of her. I read somewhere that she is the wife of Ron Davies, of bendy over sucky sucky get your wallet nicked fame.

But if you go to the annual conference there are plenty of youngsters who are members. I suspect politicians don't really connect with most of us, youngsters, middle aged, whatever. Just more pensioners are looking for stuff to keep them busy. You only ever see pensioner volunteers at National Trust or Cadw places too!

Not surprised the young don't vote for Labour after the mess Blair, Brown the two Eds got us into . Huge debts they are going to have to pay back after the reckless spending by Brown plus the deepest recession cause by Labour since the 30s. At least now we have a record number of people I work but I guess some idiots will still vote for Labour as they will no doubt increase benefits for the feckless, bone idle who wasted their school years and now complain thats it is everybodys fault but their own.
