What immediately struck me as unfair about the proposal is that people have little control over the value of their home. Take for instance an elderly couple who have lived in the same house for sixty years that just happens to be in a part of east London undergoing a process of gentrification. Chances are their house value will have sky-rocketed and could land them with monthly bills they are ill-prepared to meet.

As opposed to Tory policies where demonising the less fortunate and trite cliches about socialism are all the rage? Most of the bitterness in British politics lies on the right who remain convinced that everyone on benefits is taking the piss.
The mansion tax is fine by me. It's symbolic and will affect few. I'm not about to shed tears for the asset rich/cash poor. As Private Partz has already pointed out, no ne has given a sh*t about the cash poor/asset poor over this past five years. So I'm not about to shed any tears for anyone who may be eligible to pay this gimmicky tax

I don't object to that principle in the slightest, Clase. In fact I'm prepared to bet I've probably got more of the classic tracts of Distributism sat here on my bookshelves than the rest of the board put together but that, to my and countless other minds, isn't what Socialism is about. It has never been about social justice or any of the other wishfully thought claims made on its behalf. It's a totalitarian ideology that seeks to replace freedom of thought, conscience and action with the drudgery of ant-heap collectivism.

Sorry A I think that's a slightly biased view, bitterness comes from both end s of the political spectrum. Also 16yr olds deciding on the future? Some will be switched on but many ( I think most) will either not vote or just follow the views of parents |  | | |

There is no such thing as a bedroom tax. There is however an end to people receiving a rent subsidy for a larger property than they need.
