My step son is banned from playing GTA as I think he is far to young (10), yet our neighbour son of the same age is allowed to play it at will, which causes some friction between the two, due to the jealousy and nagging for us!
Thoughts?

Soldiering is a noble profession, Skip, and whatever self-esteem issues you're exhibiting on here (be they real or imagined, the Jury's still out) will have evaporated by the time you've had your Passing out Parade.

These games are 18+ rated for a very good reason. The rating is not put there for a joke. Games these days are completely different from the likes of Pacman and Space Invaders which you probably think of when you think of video games.

Would you let your child watch Reservoir Dogs or Boys N the Hood?
If the answer is yes, then go ahead.

But don't complain if/when your child is using the language he's heard in the game or worse, and be another one of these dopey militant parents who want the game industry banned because their 'little Timmy' decided it was funny to ram a kitchen knife into the pet cat's forehead.

There are thousands of games that a child can get perfectly innocent, age appropriate enjoyment from. This is not one of them.
It is a game that has been made for the likes of me who have been playing video games for 20-30 years.
Really is high-time people started taking video game ratings seriously.

I've played games most of my life. I grew up on them, and where I fill there are some horrible scapegoating going on in regards to games, the rating system is a great thing. Sure some countries (cough *australia-germany*) have it out on the cuff, the ratings in this country (and the US where I live) I feel are pretty much on the level.

I will say if the kid was 15, this conversation would be different. But at 10 years old, its much to young to have to be confronted with foreign information and put to a snappy and snarky backdrop of sophmoric humour. Though it could be worse, Saints row is bleeding hillarious bu I couldn't imagine the ten year old that exposed to some of the material in the vein.

Where games aren't going to make a kid go out on drive by. learning in this way can soften or at least put a negative spin on life's education IMHO. I mean my generation often laugh at prostitutes and drug abuse. Why is it that I wonder?

Food for thought if anything.

Thanks for all the views and the majority confirming our stand, quite an interesting thread. He is going to wait for quite a few years before he has a chance to play it, by which time it will be very much old hat anyway. He can stick to mindcraft etc for the time being.

Stick to your guns, by you not allowing it he will be aware that it is not appropriate regardless of whether he plays it elsewhere.

When 'we' were kids we all snuck out and had a fag or a drink at some point knowing that it's wrong and our parents would never allow it in their presence, but that's the point we knew it was wrong because our parents were against it for legitimate reasons.

As I said earlier, i've been playing games all of my life from Pacman to this latest GTA and I wouldn't allow a child anywhere near it.

Does he have an xbox one? If so you can set parent controls on his account so that he won't be able to log into it on his own console or anyone elses. Have a read of this:
http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-one/security/child-attempts-to-view-restricte

That may seem to some as overkill and you being a bit of a killjoy, but its there for a reason and it's what I would do.

Coincidently there was an item about this very subject on Radio 2 yesterday. I don’t get to listen to the radio very often during the day, so I’m not sure who the DJ was (it’s was lunchtime - he was a tad annoying in a Daily Mail outrage kind of way).

The subject was whether primary school aged kids should play violent video games, with GTA and CoD specifically highlighted. I think it had started because a headmaster/mistress somewhere had reported a family to social services/police for allowing their child to play these games unsupervised. Most of the professionals they had on the show were agreed that these are not games for primary school children to be playing. They interviewed a headmistress who said that she too would report any claims by kids this young that they are playing such games, *IF* she couldn’t get a reassuring response after discussing it with the family. The point being that they are obviously not suitable for kids aged c 5-11, and might be a pointer towards other levels of neglect and possibly even abuse.

And in light of the teenage (12-13 yr old) sex abuse story today, you’d question the appropriateness of games like GTA5 even for kids younger than their mid-teens.

So you've definitely made the right choice. Beside, the more you keep them off the PlayStation the longer you can spend on it .

Whatever generation you are there are games that are criticised for being too gory/adult. In my era it was mortal kombat, but I still played it and Ive never copied anything on it. The time I ripped that guys heart from his ribcage was a coincidence.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I need more info before I can decide if I agree it was a coincidence. After ripping his heart out, did you stand over him and say 'You Lose'?

In GTA 5 you can have sex in the first person. I wouldn't be worried about my child running over dozens of people, i'd be more frightened of him having a completely skewed view of sex and women.

I normally hate this kind of game, and have always disliked the GTA series, because it made you do the same thing over and over when you died. This doesn't happen anymore...as much, at least not to an annoying level. It starts you off a little bit before you died in the mission.

I absolutely love GTA 5 PC (never played console versions) it is, in my opinion, a masterpiece and possibly the best game of its type ever created.

I've played nothing but story mode since launch day, spending hours on it and i've apparently only done 23%. It took me maybe a couple of hours to get the hang of it, so if you're like me stick with it.

Ok job done I'm ordering it today on steam.

I ll try to stick with it but if I don't gel with a game after half hour or so I normally ditch it.

Have to admit though this looks tasty graphics wise...and to think it all started off from humble beginnings in Scotland a few years ago to become this multi billion international monster of a game.

Well done to the developers...but keep young kids away from this please.
