The Official Planet Swans General Election 2015 Thread 20:33 - Apr 7 with 83297 viewsexiledclaseboy

About time we had one and it's got the word "official" in the title so that makes all the difference. If a mod wants to sticky it, feel free.

I seem to remember that five years ago (on the old, better Planet Swans) we got to nearly 100 pages and then another 60odd with the "aftermath" thread. They were good fun but there were more posters then and we were all a bit more tolerant of others' views. Let's try to be nice to each other, eh.

Anyway, best site for opinion polls is this one in my experience:

http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/

Polls are so tight the only conclusion is that the Tories and Labour are head to head nationwide. Can't put a whisker between them.

Tories need about 39-40% for an overall majority. Labour will probably get one on 36-37%. God bless our ridiculous voting system.

So, enjoy yourselves. I'll start with a prediction. Labour to win most seats but slightly fewer votes than the Tories and end up forming some kind of minority government with support from various parliamentary lefties on a vote by vote basis. And then all of a sudden many Tory supporters will discover that they've always hated first past the post and can't understand why we perpetuate a system under which the party which more people voted for than any other can lose the election. It'll be quite funny and lead to calls for a proper voting system. Which everyone will forget about in six months when all the fuss has died down.

What say you?

Poll: Tory leader

There is no England or Wales or Scotland or Northern Ireland as regards being individual sovereign states, they are just different parts of one singular sovereign state and you clearly think that some people should have better services than other people living within the same state.
There is dog eat dog and survival of the fittest and there is fairness and equality.
[Post edited 30 Apr 2015 20:02]

You appear to be deliberately twisting what is being said.
I do not treat the different parts of the UK differently - that is why I believe Barnett to be grossly unfair.
You on the other hand applauded Sturgeon saying Wales should get parity with Scotland. By definition that means England would get even less.
You also believe that urban parts of the UK should get less than rural areas as it supposedly costs more to deliver public services in rural areas. That is true of things like rubbish collection which you specifically mentioned but ignores the areas where rural communities get much better public services (class sizes in schools for example).
You are also ignoring social deprivation. Parts of London for example have far higher social deprivation than any part of rural Wales yet you want them to accept less money so your bins can be collected more frequently! What about their policing costs which are miles higher due to that deprivation or is that less important than your bins?
As I said, you want all the good bits and none of the downsides.

I believe the problems to be different in each but each has to realize they can't get the beat of everything - there has to be a tradeoff.
But carry on trying to make out that you are caring and sharing if that makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

You clearly want better services for different areas Lisa, you talk about England, Scotland, Wales, London all the time, we are one country, services will cost more in some areas than others, particularly rural areas so more money needs to go to those areas to keep basic services the same across the country.

Miliband saying he would rather lose the election than do a deal with the SNP, really, lose the election than do a deal with a progressive social justice party hey....hmm, Labour teamed up together with the Conservatives in the Scottish referendum just last year, Labours policies and the Conservatives policies are almost the same, I still think its an outside shot that both Labour and the Conservatives will formally marry and publically declare their love for each other, more likely to keep their love affair with each other discreet, but you never know the way things are going could a Grand coalition of blue and red Tories be on the cards ?.....hmm, if so the end of the union could come very quickly.

Dave's just told us all exactly why he loves the NHS. Again.

He didn't play the Ivan card again did he? I was zoning in and out during his 30 minutes as he steadfastly refused to answer any questions. That man has no shame.

Never thought I'd say this but Miliband gets better as the campaign gets on. Made a horrendous gaffe regarding past spending but that aside was worrying the best of the bunch. Clegg looks like that 40 year old footballer desperately trying to recapture his past glories but his body just isn't up to it. It'd almost be sad to see if he hasn't been such a desperate fraud.

It'll all depend on the numbers, and as a numbers geek I find that terribly exciting. I might knock up a spreadsheet and everything.

Big question I guess is whether the Tories can get enough seats to block a Labour minority Govt that is ruling out any accommodations with the SNP. Polls seem to suggest not but I have a feeling the Tories will be the biggest party next Thursday.

National polls are meaningless in all this. Even though the election has been fought ever more on national lines, it's going to come down to certain constituencies and a lot of those polls are a lot tougher to call. The SNP wins are probably overstated as all the constituency polls there ignore the name of the candidate, which will likely help the incumbent. And who really knows about the Libs .... their support is a lot more concentrated than ever, so ironically the party of PR is likely to benefit a bit from the current system.

I wouldn't worry if it's Miliband or Cameron though. There's little difference given the commitments made over the last few weeks.

And that is fair and reasonable.

We ll be back to add our cross.

Wirral west ,they reckon, is key.

Labour should never really win this seat and was Tory stronghold for years as was Wallasey.

I do believe labour changed the boundaries significantly and its now more egalitarian, which is a shame.
Hope you ok, la

I'm fabulous. Hope you ok.

Swansea West couldn't be less interesting. Libs came a few hundred votes away last time, but a lot of that was due to Clegg plus a strong local candidate.Neither is the case this time, and there are barely any non-Labour signs unless you count the UKIP ones in Townhill.

Oh and I politely request everyone in the Gower constituency votes for Sparky. Good man, brother of a fine PS poster, and not that horror Byron whatsit who can't even be bothered to turn up in his other job as an AM.

The forensic investigation into him was epic in its execution.

The scale of the corruption revealed was just breathtaking. What I don't understand is why the Home Office hasn't pressed for his deportation, or would that compromise the happiness of his cat or some such nonsense the Court trots out.

Talking of Trots they could deport Galloway, McCluskey and Livingstone along with all the other bastard reds who have supported the crook; the whole foul mess on the next boat leaving Ramsgate, one way. Better yet clear the harbour and just heave them overboard.

but surely spending more man has to be the answer,

but if it was as simple as that then why not spend who wouldn't want people to spend?

as I said many times there are many economic schools of thought on this they all differ, I don't really think that Swansea can handle any more austerity, I went to town yesterday and was shocked, I haven't been there for a month and more shops have closed.

I hate tories ever since the time of the wicked witch, but the current mess on Swansea has nothing to do with tories its down to labour we haven't been ruled by tories in wales, we have a labour council who are simpletons and I don't use the word loosely, they are so concerned with the EU's regulations which stop them doing what they would like so why do they support the EU if its stopping them doing things, that they would like???????
They are concerned with being fair to other places in the EU and giving them equal opportunities to us, I am sure if these pen pushers had their own jobs on the line they would not be so cavalier about the consequences of their red tapes. The other places in the EU aren't fair to us and don't give us opportunities therefore our own government are putting us at a disadvantage while maintaining false dignity.

these are the people that make the biggest difference to you not the eton mess.

Its a pity plaid weren't making more of an effort here in Swansea west, no on else is so i'm sure they'd nik it.

Dr Dai is the sort of person you can trust, honestly most people do trust him with their lives, get back into politics Dr Dai Swansea West this time

The EU stopping things. I wonder if this is more a case of Swansea council using the EU as an excuse rather than admit their own incompetence

Read today some journo talking about how Leanne Wood is one of the nicest politicians he's spoken to down the years, read Newsnight political editor the other day describing her as ''A very admirably modest politician''.

The lovely Leanne has done well, she is clearly very committed to the cause, pity there are not more like her in politics.

I really like the way she talked to Owen labour,

just like a naughty little school boy caught by the headmistress burning wasps with his magnifying glass!!!

absolutely hysterical he was beaming red with embarrassment.

she is class and I love that accent it so homely

I also liked Pippa Green she comes across as an honest person who does not take herself to serious.

Ed Milliband should be ashamed of himself saying he would not join up with socialist groups and he'd rather the tories got in ,

it really shows what sort of tory hater he is, hes not concerned about the welsh or getting tories out of government,

hes about his own ego nothing else plastic fin tory

same infant school as boris

He didn't say that he would rather the Tories get in though did he.

He said that he would not join any sort of coalition or deal with a party (parties) who primary aim was the break up of the UK.

Since the Labour party stood categorically for a No vote in the Sottish referendum and stands categorically for a United Kingdom, I can't see the hypocrisy myself. Surely the overall aim to remain one country is more fundamental than a particular individual policy for a maximum 5 year period?

And as I've repeatedly pointed out, the fact that Boris went to a state infant school for a short period doesn't say anything at all about their respective educations. I'll guarantee one thing - Ed's father was more of a socialist than Leanne Wood will be in her entire life.
