His resilience and appetite to play is quite remarkable and, for a central defender no suspensions is quite amazing. Add in his invisible (to refs) hands and he surely has to be one of our best ever players. To get 9 (?) almost complete seasons for 400K is nothing short of spectacular. He also makes his partners look good, yet almost always taken for granted.

Best 400grand the club as ever spent, he's been a remarkable player for us, to have grown with us over the years and become the player he is, quite simply outstanding.

Special mention has got to go to Monk for the help in making him that player to, don't think its been recognised in all honesty, but seeing Monk now as manager and appreciating his intelligence on and off the field, its clear that he has played a major part in Ashes development as a player.

I was about to post the same thing re Monk when I read the topic. Monk was a colossus for us and we were a different prospect when he was fit and in the side. Helped Ashley develop and made Steven Caulker in to a very good player when he was with us too.

Innit, you can see and appreciate it now, after the start he's had in management, as a player his reading and organisation of a game was superb and that's showing now in his management, yes he's made mistakes without doubt and he'll probably make a few more, but his qualities are clearly evident.
