Looks very bad for us all as markets will hate news they face being closed.

So how s this anti austerity left wing leader of theirs coping apart from grinning inanely and trying to look cool.

What a fooking disastrous leader of a country.

Do you think that the bankers who lent the money, that the Greeks had no way of paying back, bear any responsibility at all ? Just a thought like. .....

Austerity has totally failed Greece - as it will fail others.

Although I can't agree with some things I can understand Greece not being bent over and shagged by the EU. Difficult times.

So it was the horrible banks... not down to Greece whatsoever.

It's not Greece's fault they faked figures about their economy to gain exit to the Euro.

It's not Greece's fault their tax collections figures have been appallingly low.

It's not Greece's fault they've spent spent spent without being able to pay.

I could swear some people would fake figures to get a mortgage on a good house they couldn't afford and then complain it's not their fault when the bank repossesses.

Greece as a nation have wanted a good life. They've chosen not to bother about worrying about paying for it, expecting the rest of Europe to pay for it. As Dazza would say, fuk 'em.

The whole of Greece is paying for Athens dining at the top table. A lot of Greeks have made a fortune from the Euro at the expense of the majority, time for them to pay up.

LMFAO.

Do you think the tax evasion is magically restricted to the "1%" - the amount of tax revenue collected by successive Greek governments has been pathetic, amongst the lowest in Europe.

Tax evasion is endemic across all social strata there, yes there's widespread corruption at the highest level and the tax collection system is obviously hideously flawed...but all levels have been fiddling the books.

Take a look at the world debt table. Britain owes 10 times more than Greece. We will be in serious shit soon.

Look at the debt levels Man Utd have. Are they being liquidated anytime soon? No, because the debt is serviceable.

Britain and Greece aren't comparable.

Greek debt has actually doubled since the austerity measures started 5 years ago. Therefore it is clear that more austerity is not likely to be the real answer. And the banks have made billions of Euros from greece during the last 5 years. After Greece then who next .... Portugal, spain ? The system is a failure.

And why has it doubled? Successive Greek governments have given lip service to austerity.

Has tax revenue been increased dramatically by simply doing their jobs competently? Like feck...

Agree the Euro is a failure. Trying to harmonise disparate communities politically, economically and legally is a ridiculous socialist notion. People signed up for a trading block - Euro equivalent of NAFTA. Everything else is dragging Europe down.

If someone borrows money that they can't afford to pay back who's fault is it? Can't remember Greeks rioting when they got to retire at 50 on full pensions either.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Nope. But it is interesting that Greece had returned to growth (admittedly from a low base) and ran a current account surplus in 2013 - the latter the first time in a decade.

And, as it turned out, the last time in a decade.

My view is that's more down to voting in an incompetent government rather than a socialist one. But it's certainly true that Greece has rapidly returned to crisis since the current lot came in.

Anyone going to Greece better take all the currency they need with them. A friend returned from Rhodes yesterday and nearly ran out of cash because he couldn't exchange his travellers cheques anywhere

Travellers cheques! I didn't think anyone used them anymore. Always found them very costly, having to pay for them, then pay again to change them. Cash is king.

The bailout money is going to the banks rather than to Greece.

IMF loans money to Greece, Greece gives it to banks it owes money to. Greece now owes the IMF.

It's a way of transferring the debt from the private banks to the governments, and making sure that the banks lose as little money as possible.

Of course, the Greeks have been effing stupid and have been suffering because of it for the last five years, but there's a lot more blame to go around. Whoever lent them the money should see all of it written off as a bad debt and just start again, because I haven't heard anyone explain how the Greeks could ever repay any of this.

Whatever our different political opinions, we can all agree that this situation is fu*king mental, and if we're the most intelligent creatures in the Universe, then the Universe is in big trouble.

Not so sure about that given the role American banks had in Greece playing the markets in the early 2000s.
' ... the controversy regarding usage of derivatives’ deals with U.S. Banks by Greece and other Eurozone countries to artificially reduce their reported budget deficits. A currency swap arranged with Goldman Sachs allowed Greece to 'hide' 2.8 billion Euros of debt, ...'

So the banks are not entirely exonerated.

I gather the situation has got even worse in the past couple of days, the whole country has run out of hummus and taramasalata.
