I don't get this received wisdom that any movement to the left by Labour will make them even more unelectable.

Labour didn't lose the election because they weren't enough like the Tories but because they were annihilated by a party that outflanked them to the left in Scotland and losing votes to an anti-establishment party, anti-austerity parties and disenchanted Labour voters just not bothering to vote in England and Wales.

If Labour try to occupy the same ground as the Tories then they are doomed to even more failure as the Tories will always be able to out-Tory them and the party will just alienate its core support.

I'm voting for Jeremy Corbyn, by the way, with no second preference.

and good luck to you cottsy, its your right to do so.

Im sure you have the same respect for those who vote Tory/Right .

Labour were decimated because during the 70s and 80s they terrified the majority of voters, nothing to do with liking the Tories as LABOUR were seen as thugs/dickheads/ who were destroying our country .

Thatcher was re elected by the same populace and was respected/idolised by many who saw her as one who had guts to do the dirty but necessary work.

And that last sentence doesn't necessarily mean its one I agree with 100%.

To give credit, he was excellent on Andrew Marr this morning. Spoke with passion and conviction, and answered the questions asked. He had a clear vision of what his leadership would represent, was a very entertaining interview and a million miles from the bland spin you usually get from politicians.

No wonder he stands out from the monochrome of the other contenders for leader.

Bonkers, obviously, but PMQs would be epic if he wins.

If I had a vote (I don't) I'd vote for Corbyn for all the reasons I've previously stated in this thread. Also, the other three are identikit modern politicians without a proper conviction (not the criminal kind) between them. let Corbyn put his programme to the nation.

People deemed as not labour are joining the party purely to force home an extreme lefty agenda.

This will give erections to many on here but it is election suicide.

Corbin will kill labour stone dead as an electable government prospect. The greater country outside South Wales ,the North and Scotland will never ever vote for a guy like this to lead our country.

Jeremy Corbyn speaking on Marr this morning.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02y2ffn

The fact that people are calling his views and policies extreme are, to me, more reflective of how much the British public's views have been nudged to the right over the past 30+ years. Has the Overton window been open over Neo-Liberalism for so long that any alternatives are dismissed as crazy?

Also - he mentions TTIP toward the end of the interview. I think it's the first time I've seen it mentioned on BBC TV. It's worth looking into if you've not heard of it.

While I agree that he's nowhere near as extreme as he's being made out to be there's no way he can be described as a social democrat either. He's a socialist. And that's not a dirty word.

Aye Perch, whereas Cooper, Burnham or the one with the F*ck me green shoes who for some reason thinks she's been subjected to sexism* would stroll through an election. Corbyn, amazingly, is labour's best hope out of those four.

This is not the reason that labour lost, but the reason it wasn't predicted. There were loads of the so called ashamed tory. People that will vote for them, but would never admit it because of the abuse they'd get from the left.

And Clement Attlee won a landslide victory against Britain's most popular leader after he had just led Britain to victory in the second World War with probably the most socialist manifesto ever put to the British people but that doesn't prove anything either.

What made the circumstances right for the people to reject socialism in 1983 or overwhelmingly accept it in 1945 have little to do with what is happening in the world today.

There is a growing wave of anti-austerity and anti-establishment politics sweeping across the western world and Jeremy Corbyn could be the right person at the right time to lead it in the UK.

Around 50,00 young people have joined Labour in the past few weeks just to vote for Corbyn, they don't care what happened in the 1983 election they care about what is happening to them now, how they are being saddled with a lifetime of debt, are being priced out of even renting a home and are being forced to carry the burden for the government's austerity measures.

And before anyone says "but young people don't vote" they do if they think they have something to vote for, just look at Scotland for proof.

Sadly the PLP will do everything in its power to ignore the democratic will of the party membership by either working against JC if he's elected or by just ignoring the huge shift to the left by the members if he doesn't win by giving Liz Kendall a plum shadow cabinet job and sending JC back to the wilderness.

If man evolved from monkeys why do we still have monkeys?
