The required points total varies from year to year sgorio, underlined by the fact that on rare occasions 40 points would not be good enough to stay up, 36 is more on the mark for being good enough to stay up and any team getting 37 is very likely to stay up, any team getting 37 since the Swans have been in the Premier league have stayed up.
I know there is no guarantees because it can vary from season to season but I've always worked on the old point a game average, I think its only 2 teams in the last 12 seasons that have gone down having achieved that amount of points.
So 36 points might fractionally have a better than 50-50 chance these days, 37 is likely to stay up and 38 very likely to stay up, the widely quoted 40 points is playing safe although not guaranteed.
Swans have 18 points from 18 games although 10 of those fixtures have been at home and there is usually an advantage to playing at home.
Its the halfway mark tomorrow, everybody having played each other once, although some teams will have had 10 home games to others 9 home games, but a good time to take stock of the league table, although the weekend might be a better guide as regards the table as everybody I believe will have played 10 home and 10 away although everybody will have played one team twice, one team will have played Man City twice while somebody else will have played Aston Villa twice but nevertheless a reasonable time to look at the table.
If the Swans are in the relegation zone after 19 games [everybody played everybody else once] or after 20 games [everybody played 10 home and 10 away matches] then they are in the relegation zone, if not then they are not in the relegation zone.
Yesterdays win was vital, Swans would have been in deep trouble if they had not won that match, Swans now more likely to stay up than go down, will that still be the case after match week 20 I wonder, I hope and expect so.  |  |

40 points may well not be enough this season as there are no stand out teams. All the 'top' teams have lost to 'bottom' teams so far. WBA have 20 points from 18 games and after seeing their huffing and puffing yesterday, they are well in the mix. |  |
