Colonial days and the natives on 18:20 - Aug 29 by Humpty
Which tribes were Eric Griffith-Jones and Sir Evelyn Baring members of Loh? As they were corresponding about Britain's torture practices in the detention camps Britain had set up? The British colonial tribe?
Have times changed? Think on this: how much do you REALLY think the man in the street would care if ISIS terrorists were similarly treated? Forget all about the etiquette and parameters of decent behaviour, the public facade of propriety, deep-down how many do you think would be saying "good enough for them?" Be honest.
Many on here would support it Loh. I wouldn't myself. Call me a silly old liberal but I don't think female detainees should ever be raped with bottles of boiling water. Ever. Especially by a country that likes to call itself civilised. Tree hugging tw*t that I am.
Well as you probably know Griffith-Jones and Baring were Attorney-General and Governor of Kenya, respectively. Neither had a role in counter-insurgency activities, per se.
It's easy to look back all these years later and say how awful; easy to say because it really was awful but you have to face the facts that the Kenyan Highlands were not and are not the fields of Blenheim. There was no code of European chivalry regulating the conduct of the protagonists, this was Africa. Tribal warfare there is marked by genocidal violence, stoked by ancient enmity. It's the unpalatable truth.
I've no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the white officers of native troops chose to look the other way; blood-letting for the sake of "morale" would have been the rationale, but it's not true to say that these were "Britain's torture practices," as you have. This sort of depravity had gone on long before our arrival and continues long after our departure.

It took me 50 yrs to realise I might not be right all the time.
We all bullshite but look in the mirror and the truth, which is humpy, you're morphing into a very unpleasant poster unable to avoid unpleasantness.
You also misquote or simply ignore posts you can't answer to.
I d have a rest now leave this thread alone.
British colonialist did bad things but as regards India, for example, speak to an Indian and you lol find they respect us for introducing many things to their country they stlll adhere to.
For bad, read about Leopold the murderious pig of a Belgian king.
"You also misquote or simply ignore posts you can't answer to."
I can't have been the only person to spot the incredible irony in that statement surely?

To be fair to perch he makes a compelling argument that we are indeed the master race.
As a result we have fair territorial claims to bring the African nations and peoples ( to save time let's just call them untermenshen ) under our control and protection.
We could even use the extra "living space" in africa to accommodate the expanding uk population.
To help the poor refugees fleeing conflict, lets purpose build some camps for them. Phrases at the entrance gates like work will make you free will help them appreciate how well they are being treated.
Perch should put all his philosphies, in a book to help convert those deniers of UK superiority in all these matters. He could call it something like "my struggle" with chapters entitled strength through joy and a new world order.

"Perch should put all his philosophies, in a book....."
Apparently he's planning on starting one but he's run out of crayons.

Fair play, your last paragraph is gold...

Loh, I quoted a letter where Griffith-Jones discusses the torture policy of the UK with Baring. UK officials talking about how torture should be carried out in UK detention camps. It's quite specific what they want to be done. Don't beat them in various organs etc.
Don't tell me that it was nothing to do with British torture practices. It was.

Heh. Someone will have to explain this to him if he's going to get it though.
You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

Perch and dtg play the English led British state and the Empire is great card but when challenged about blood and soil and nationalist traits they go quiet, its been said the Romans noted how quick the Celts were to learn compared to 'others', Normans apparently married Welsh of equal standing but not 'others', a book Hitler apparently called his 'bible' noted the Welsh as being in the civilised group via maps. Perch and dgt like to try and put across how great GB is but when pressed on a more detailed look at the different peoples of these islands, they don't like it then, oh no, I wonder if its because they don't see themselves as belonging to the highest order ?

What you've done, Hump, is quote a partial section of a single missive culled from what is an absolutely vast archive bereft of context and, crucially, omitting the response.

I would of withdrawn from Kenya. When your existence in the country depends on torturing people it's time to f*ck off.
