Films based on true stories 15:41 - Aug 30 with 5867 viewsdickythorpe

I sometimes struggle to watch films but in recent months I watched the Straight Story ,and Into the Wild.
I much prefer films that aren't made up but are based on actual events.

Any others to recommend by discerning PS film buffs?

Movie fans watch southpaw , awesome, pulls at heart strings, your not human if not motivated by it

I don't want to upset you but Southpaw is not based on a true story, I think Shrek has more non-fictional elements.

Couldn't let this thread slip without mention of The Sound of Music of course...

Friends have been to the Von Trapp family ranch in New England - it remains a dream of mine, together with Dollywood :-)

Dollywood, really? My father lives in Knoxville, Tennessee which is stone throw from pidgeonforge. Pretty area it is.

In Cold Blood, based on the great book by Truman Capote about the murder of a family in Kansas.
Haven't seen it for decades but left a big impression. Score by Quincy Jones, pop pickers.

Amazon beckons...

I'd love to go there. I imagine it's hysterical.

Love a bit of trashy camp and Dolly is the absolute Queen of trashy camp.

I saw 'Everest' last night - the 3D version.

Thought it was excellent - really enjoyed it.

The character that played Ted Moult was outstanding - he captured him perfectly

ha !

It was actually very very good - an old mate of mine was one of the writers which is one of the reasons that I went to see it. Having no real interest (or, indeed interest of any kind) in mountaineering I thought it may be a bit dull but I was gripped.

The Walk next I think although having seen the 3D trailer last night, I'm a bit worried about vertigo - is it possible to get vertigo watching a film

Watching Vertigo up a mountain might bring it on.

Never seen a 3D film - can't say I want to either, although a porno could be entertaining...

Not sure they show many of those in the Vue Westfield!!

I quite like 3D for some films - takes a few minutes for your eyes to adjust but that's what the trailers are for.

For stuff like the film last night, it can be incredible. You get a great sense of the height and stuff. For 'normal' films I can't see the point and I imagine it's a bit distracting.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned "Zulu".

Brilliant film. Alas the movie and reality bear little resemblance. I'd love to watch it again too see how many soldiers were actually killed. The fact is only 17 british soldiers lost their lives and only 15 injured! And 'maverick shirker come loveable rogue' Henry Cook was actually a model soldier. Not quite Braveheart material, but nonetheless extremely sensationlised!

Yes, it was glamourised but it was based on fact. Apparently Hook's descendants attended the premiere and walked out in disgust at the way he was portrayed.

Raging Bull always had an effect on me. Amazing film and amazingly sad to see the self destruction of Jake Le Motta.

Braveheart is full of needless changing of fact.

It's worth it for Patrick McGoohan's performance as Edward I though. Under rated. But I'm a Longshanks enthusiast.
