Films based on true stories 15:41 - Aug 30 with 5868 viewsdickythorpe

I sometimes struggle to watch films but in recent months I watched the Straight Story ,and Into the Wild.
I much prefer films that aren't made up but are based on actual events.

Any others to recommend by discerning PS film buffs?

In to the Wild is brilliant, but slightly depressing.

Have you seen Beautiful Mind?

Also Moneyball and Lincoln.

Apparently 'Jack to a King' is based on a true story.

Titanic

Wonderland - about the Los Angeles Wonderland murders that involved porn star John Holmes in the summer of 1981.

Dark movie with a lot of drugs, but Val Kilmer's best performance IMO.

I enjoyed The Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, directed by Clint Eastwood.

I saw that brian wilson biopic "love and mercy" yesterday. A bit slow going I thought. Saved by the music and recreations of the pet sounds era recording sessions.

I liked UP!

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

'Stop at Nothing' was a very good watch. It basically hangs Lance Armstrong out to dry and shows all the interviews where he'd condemned doping. It also has the interview where after being suspected he uttered the immortal words 'Do you think as an ambassador for people living with cancer that I'd dare cheat and take drugs (EPO) in my field of sport'.

He was very convincing and a great liar right up until his admission where he was cornered like a rat.

Another good watch is 'The Grizzly Man'.Timothy Tredwell a deluded eccentric who lived amongst Grizzlies in Alaska for 13 years. He films nearly all of it and thought he'd morphed into a Bear himself and become one of them. One day he got too close and soon realized he was no bear.

'Blackfish' is a superb documentary too.The tale of killer whales kept in captivity in Seaworld, Florida. One frustrated and depressed orca called Tillikum killed 2 of it's trainors and a pisshead who thought he'd go for a dip one night. It was all kept hush hush and each death blamed on the negligent trainors he'd killed. The real reason was his sperm cost 250,000 dollars a shot and was in high demand given his size and Seaworld skills. It's an eyeopener and highlights the length humans will go to and how greed and money is more important than the lives of fellow human beings.

I watched 'Point and Shoot' recently and again really enjoyed it.A bored American 20 something decides to go on a motorbike adventure armed with a camera and ride through the middle East.He gets caught up in all sorts of bother in Syria where he ends up in prison for months before escaping. He then joins the rebel forces in Libya and helped on the frontline in getting rid of Gadaffi. It's all caught on his own camera and a very good documentary.

The Straight Story is a wonderful film. Fly Away Home and Black Stallion have similar tone, but the other end of the age spectrum.
An Honest Liar is a documentary but tells a good story.

There was a very good film on BBC1 tonight. In the valley of Elah. Based on a true story. About what the Iraq war did to the poor bastards who had to fight it. Very good.

Kajaki.

British soldiers guarding the Kajaki Dam set out to rescue a three-man team after one of them loses a leg to a landmine. Not your typical shoot them up.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

I was disappointed with how one sided and almost propaganda like blackfish was. That being said, orcas should never be in captivity so feck em.

Ever since my son was... never conceived, because I've never had consensual sex without money involved... I've always kind of looked at you as... a thing, that I could live next to... in accordance with state laws.

Chopra story?...... Now that would be some movie?......But!..........Surely if all the visit-to-bookie scenes are to get full dramatisation? Wouldn't a mini-movie series be more appropriate?........

And the accompanying book? Now I know War And Peace is supposed to have an incredible amount of pages and is known to be of ample girth?...... But the book for this one will have to be paperback cos a hardback might be too heavy to carry?
