Films based on true stories 15:41 - Aug 30 with 5865 viewsdickythorpe

I sometimes struggle to watch films but in recent months I watched the Straight Story ,and Into the Wild.
I much prefer films that aren't made up but are based on actual events.

Any others to recommend by discerning PS film buffs?

Pride.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

Unbroken was pretty good. I had assumed they had greatly exaggerated Zamperinis treatment in POw camps but it seems he really did go through a terrible ordeal.

Our lad recorded that film for me, and the end was missing? So he recorded it again....and you've guessed it...

No ending.

All films that are based on true events have fictional elements incorporated. Like dialogue. May as well make a documentary otherwise.

Anyway, just one more episode of Narcos left (for me). Phenomenal show. If you don't like fictional elements, give it a miss. You're doing yourself a disservice otherwise. Prepare for disturbing actual footage, though.

Into the Wild is one of my favourites too, but would recommend (not a film) 'Band of Brothers' series, which with the interviews of the real soldiers is very poignant.

(Is that the first time the word 'poignant' has been used on these forums?)

Argo is a good film and I don't usually like Ben Affleck

Throw away and disregard the rest of the movie but the 'true' part at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan? The opening sequence beach scene where the U.S soldiers rushed headlong into direct heavy machine gun fire and artillery rammed home the horror of war for me. God!.......What hell those guys must have gone through! That was no Rambo glory bulls**t the enemy fires back......and actually hits the target with devastating effect!

Argus!

There was a very good film on BBC1 tonight. In the valley of Elah. Based on a true story. About what the Iraq war did to the poor bastards who had to fight it. Very good.

Another vote for this. I caught this film by chance on BBC1, having never heard of it before. Tommy Lee Jones puts on a masterclass performance.

In the week where he died, I'd put in a mention for Awakenings, the story of Oliver Sacks' treatment of catatonic patients with L Dopa. An excellent film.

On a similar theme, I also think the film Lorenzo's Oil with Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon is incredibly interesting, not least the involvement of the small facility in Yorkshire who helped them pioneer a a treatment that I believe is still used today.

If no one's mentioned them, we watched 'Pride' last night and 'The Imitation Game' last week. Both passed the time quite agreeably.

I watched the first two today, good so far.

I saw it mentioned that this was on netflix but didn't pay much attention, never realised it was about Pablo Escobar. I've read loads on this chap and so far, this show pretty much follows what really happened.

Couldn't let this thread slip without mention of The Sound of Music of course...

Friends have been to the Von Trapp family ranch in New England - it remains a dream of mine, together with Dollywood :-)

Watched the he film 'Hunger' last night, anyone else seen this? It's about the Bobby Sands hunger strike in the Maze prison.

Hell of a film, very graphic and violent but compelling viewing.

Braveheart. Every time you watch it, the reality becomes more clearer. Especially the part where William Wallace 'makes love' to the wife of the son of Edward Longshanks and she becomes pregnant by him, and reveals to the evil king on his deathbed that the baby will eventually become king as his son is so weak. A very touching moment and just gets me every time.

Only winner of Planetswans Petulant Diva award.

Which of course never actually happened.

Braveheart was one of a list of films I was considering listing where the words 'based on real events' should have been 'fiction based on real characters'.

Mel Gibson is renowned to not be a big Britain fan, The Patriot is another of his films that can be categorized in the same way.

Edit.

Wallace: Born 1270, died 1305.
Isabella: Born 1295, died 1358.

At Wallace's death she was 10 years old and not arrived in England yet.

I did enjoy both films though, good story and decent action in both but not at all aiming to be accurate in any way.

Do we count biopic type films?
