... AND IN REPLY TO PACEMAKER, I still go to the odd Rugby League game and the hits are big there too and more of the as the ball is in play most of the time whereas in union its often not the case. However that would take us into the interminable Union v League debate which has been done to death.
I could put forward a team with a bygone era of forwards NOT being thugs. First players I thought of were dear old Dai Morris and Delme.

League and Union have nothing in common other than the shape of the ball. I doubt many GB players of the 70/80s could match up to today's RL teams.
There were a number of nice guys back in the day apart from those mentioned. Dai Morris was a real gent and played in a number of charity games in aid of my father in law.Alan Martin, Bob Pembarthy and Bob Norster were all gents but needed minders in that era I know from personal experience.
I can also still feel the dead arm Omri Jones gave me for a laugh over 30 years ago. |  |

If he plays at 12 and Roberts is out we are utterly stuffed. One dimensional or not, Roberts IS cementball. If Hook plays 12 Interceptions galore plus he'll get his head ripped off after a trademark shuffle sideways hokey cokey. The risk is bad enough one further out.

Ah right, only saw the BBC Sport article which says he's in contention to play Saturday. It seems strange to me that we'd pick a player who can't even play in what could very well be our only remaining game, but perhaps there was literally no-one else available who Gats thinks is good enough.
On Walker, I had an Ospreys season ticket the year he broke through and he was electrifying. He would have been capped at the end of the season, but that's when his injuries started. Not sure he's the same player these days, which is a shame. | |

I don't like bish bosh but against the SAFFERS we have little choice but to keep North with Roberts. The two Bokke young centres are tougher than teak and will be looking to smash people so we ll have to somehow match them.

The hits at League are as hard if not more so and its why so many former Union players had to beef up and learn to tackle a man properly. Nobody would ever convince me the greats of League were any less sportmen than Union. Ellery Hanley is probably the best sportsman Ive ever seen in the flesh of .
League players don't carry excess fat as a rule and there s reason for this. Its a faster game by far. By this I include props.

I could add what running around Union props do in comparison.
One thing for sure, none of our props could play league. Lee would be mullered after 5 mins.
I knew one if the saints directors and when quinnell went to Wigan he was deemed initially too unfit overweight to start a game.
Jiffy had to go on a diet weights programme Laughton gave him just to start a game.
Bateman was in good fettle and very fit, a shocking waste of talent for Union. Lovely man .
Different skill sets but I d wager sinfield could walk into most top union teams .
Initial point I made was our culture tolerates excess fat in a way the Southern Hemisphere doesn't.
Finally, if Adam Jones had avoided excesses he di still be shoring up the scrum.

I thought tyler morgan did well against a tough Fiji team.
I think we need a specialist centre. Morgan is a big lad so will handle the physical stuff.
If we need to open up, bring hook on at 13 which is where he will be most effective. | |

RL are just a means of restarting.
When I coached the under 14 sat our local club we played League purely to give them ball in hand time. The fat lads- props- always struggled.
In mentioning Kevin Sinfield we have a totally underestimated captain player and sportsman- outstanding and a real warrior.
We ll have t go t see a game some time Phil.

Perch the RL World Cup doesnt compare to the RU World Cup.
Rugby league is a boring spectacle to me, joke scrums, no rucks, no mauls, no line outs and no fluent passing - so what is the attraction, plus what replaces all the set pieces I mentioned?
It a game for those that didnt understand Union.

Struggling to think of anyone, Jason Robinson apart, who has come from League and genuinely become world class in Union. At least in the North. Bit different in Aus, they've had a few. Sonny Bill has done alright for NZ, and who was that lock they had a couple of years ago?
I remember when Iestyn Harries came down, the big talk was about Cunningham joining him (and joining Swansea IIRC). Hooker in league. Slated as a scrum half if moved to Union. Shows how different the scrums are eh.
Not many have gone the other way lately that I can recall, but most of the Welsh boys who went up there in the 80s/90s seemed to do very well. League's certainly way less technical/tactical than Union though. |  |

I wasn't in any way referring to rugby league world cup but Im surprised to see yet agaon such contempt for the game.
This is what pissses off the North where they see Union as a snob sport played out to hoorah henries. Amazing Wales took to the game.
FAR FAR FEWER CAME DOWN TO PLAY UNION
Far more were grateful to go north to get paid officially that is instead of the rank shamateurism in Union. It was also the case northern people were and are more like Welsh people than the southern English .
Boring? Well, the interminable up and under aimless kicking of full backs, the kick and rush, the Strictly Dancing scrum farce, and the ball out of play more than its in - its not more attractive at all to many. The average Joe has no feck idea as to what is going on I scrums and the more expansive simpler League game is easier to follow.
BEST TEAM iVE EVER SEEN- Apart from our 70s , was the Wally Lewis Kangaroos who had skill sets few could not be staggered by.
