Beginning to gain momentum, regardless of people's feelings on him.

Some people are saying that he will never be President.

One name Ronald Reagan. The Americans love all this, and would vote for it to happen.
That I am sure.

My view is he won't live long enough for this to materialise.

Your loss.

Ordinary Joes in European socialist countries (not inc UK - too americanised) have a far better quality of life than their equivalent Americans.

World class health care, free further education, great public transport, better housing etc.

Yet a lot of Americans think that Europe is some sort of third world shithole. Easy to control an ignorant and ill-informed populace.

I totally agree with your last paragraph, I live in the Deep South and the times I have been asked stupid questions is unbelievable. Questions like, Do you have electricity in the UK or traffic lights or the maddest question I have been asked was do you have the Moon in the Sky in Europe ? The people where I live are some of the most nicest and friendliest people you could ever meet, but the ignorance about the world outside of the 50 States is scary.

Hilary has a shed load of baggage I.e Bengahzi, Top Secret documents left on her private server that may or not have tapped into by the Russians and of course there is also Bill lurking in the background. Bernie Sanders is a likable guy,but not President material in a million years. As for the GOP the like able candidates I.e Carson and Bush stand no chance of winning. That means being left with the two Giant Egos Trump and Cruz and a very inexperienced Marco Rubio. Carly Fiorena has just dropped out so there goes another option.
[Post edited 10 Feb 2016 20:22]

Yes, I agree about her baggage - it's why I would be reluctant to support her, irrespective of her gender (which isn't enough to get my vote). Goes without saying I would support her against the probable Republican candidate (any of them).

And the sad bit, there's this whole campaign initiative and people in her running group who are telling women they should be ashamed of themselves for not voting for her. as though her gender is the reason people should be voting for her. I don't think its hillary herself just people close to her saying this rhetoric. I wonder if alarm bells are sounding?

Question though... I wonder if I'm the only US citizen here, who isn't voting republican. Granted I'm not a member of either party.

Yes - I think that's a mistake, although of course they are replicating the whole Obama election. They are falling into the trap of (maybe inadvertently) treating women as pretty stupid sheep.

Funnily enough, I always had a sneaking suspicion that the first female president would be Chelsea rather than Hilary. The decision by the republicans to field candidates that are a bunch of fruitloops may well mean I was wrong.

Of course not, but you'd have to give me evidence that is happening, because fiscal liberals have been arguing that with me as long as I've been alive.

Capitalism certainly needs to be tweaked from time to time to keep it fair. American History itself is a testament to that. But pure socialism will never be the answer as far as I'm concerned. And I know that sounds like a stereotypical way for a bassackwardsshitkicken Texan to think, but I've always tried to stay open minded on politics.

Frankly, I hate everyone that has any chance of winning this thing. Trump is an arrogant nutcase. Cruz is a socially far right extremist douchebag. Hillary is an unethical crook. As a human being, Sanders is the only likable one, and he's a pure Marxist socialist. And all 4 lack the most important trait it takes to be a successful, meaningful President.

In the last 50 years, we've had 2 great Presidents here in the USA: Lyndon Baines Johnson on the Left and Ronald Reagan on the Right. Both shared the same secret to success: schmoozing the congressmen/women who are supposed to hate you, because they happen to be in the other political party.

This is crass of me to say, but the best thing since Abe Lincoln that happened to African Americans was when Lee Harvey Oswald blew JFK's brains out. Because, while JFK certainly had their best interests in mind, Republicans didn't like him, and they REALLY hated his brother.

In comes LBJ, a man who knew how to get on the phone and make deals. He talked to them in a thick Texas drawl, and even used the "n" word in a practical way to disarm them and trick them into voting for the Civil Rights Act. That never happens if stodgy yankee Kennedy lives and is re-elected in 1964. At least not before the 70's, at least.

Fast forward to the 1980's and Reagan is doing the same sort of thing with Democrats in order to get some major pieces of legislation passed in order to jump-start a flailing economy. Reagan's best buddy throughout his presidency was House Speaker Tip O'Neil from Massachusetts, his ideological opposite. Those two got drunk together often and saved America in the 80's.

And yes, haters, Ronald Reagan won the Cold War. I've been to Poland and he is practically a god there just for having the balls to call the totalitarian Soviet Union "the Evil Empire." Liberals will argue that Reagan's "Trickle Down Economics" policy ultimately did at least as much harm as good (as Republicans do about LBJ's Great Society), but nobody can deny that they were effective presidents (even though LBJ's legacy was destroyed by Vietnam).

Nobody we currently have running for president comes within a goddamn mile of potentially being an effective president. They ALL suck. Except maybe Jeb Bush or Ben Carson, and neither stand a chance at this point.
[Post edited 11 Feb 2016 4:39]

Sorry, but regarding the 'Reagan won the Cold War' bit - he really, really didn't you know.

And as for Sanders being a 'pure Marxist socialist' ?? He's not even a socialist let alone a Marxist. He's a social democrat. If he was in the UK, he would sit comfortably to the 'right' of the Labour party, or actually very comfortably in the Liberals.

I don't think it's a superiority thing, the United States is still a young country which bounces back from adversity I.e Civil War, The Depression ,World War 2 ,Vietnam and 9/11. The country has grown into being the global superpower, but it is still unsure of its status in the World. You get the crassness of a Cruz,Trump and even Rubio who project their vision of the US telling the World what to do,but you also get the insecurity of the people that want to be liked, but when they are not liked they get defensive and on times that turns into paranoia.

I wasn't referring to what he called himself - I have no idea on that. I was referring to his policies, which aren't socialist policies (I mean they are when compared to Cruz, but so would Thatcher's have been).

People out here equate Socialism to Communism. An example was when the whole Obama care debate was in full swing the GOP and Fox News said that Socialized medicine i.e ,the NHS and the rest of European healthcare was like some squalid Eastern European cesspit hospital compared to the US where the whole health system sucks up to the big Insurance and drug companies. People out here forget that Tony Blair was a 'Socialist', yet that prick is hailed as a hero over here. Unfortunately there are no grey areas and you are either a Conservative pro gun, pro life and for big business or you are anti gun , pro choice and for dismantling big business and the American way of life.

Sometimes I think Fox News has a similar approach to broadcasting as the North Korean news channel.

I like the U.S. very much, and the majority of Americans I have met through work or pleasure have been lovely people. But one difference I often notice is that I am more than happy to accept and indeed laugh at the failings of us British, as a people and as a country. I never believe that we live in the best country in the world or that we can't learn things from other nations who do stuff better than we do. It doesn't affect my sense of patriotism nor would I prefer to live anywhere else, but some things we do well and some badly and some things I'm very proud of and some not.

But often, Americans colleagues or friends who are more than rational in all other ways, become phenomenally angry at the suggestion that something is not 'the best' about the U.S. It's almost as though a belief that the U.S. way of life isn't all it's cracked up to be is somehow unpatriotic, or 'commie'. Quite strange, but I guess it's the insecurity of a relatively young nation, and one built on immigration with a belief that they were all migrating to something 'better'.

Absolutely, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson and Ron Paul all have reasonable views and are seen as a sensible choice, but the muppets at Fox News are pandering to Bubba and co, who are the lowest common denominator and as long as the candidates have a triple A rating with the NRA and are pro life and endorse the American way, they are the ones to vote for. Good grief as long as assholes like Sean Hannity, Rush Limburgh and Laura Ingram endorse a candidate then the masses will vote for them. As long as the 3 egos ,Cruz ,Trump and Rubio whip up a crowd into a frenzy all chanting USA,USA, repeatedly then they will have won.

I would rather a President Carson than President Trump or God forbid Cruz as the Commander in Chief. Cruz just plain scary, I don't mean him having access to the nuclear codes as there are too many checks and balances for a madman to go apeshit and start nuking Moscow or Bejing, but knowing the American Military's propensity for friendly fire they'd probably end up wiping out Manchester and Barcelona! No the scary thing about either Cruz or Trump is they would end up start sucking up to big business.
