Biggest sporting shocks ever 12:17 - May 3 with 3251 viewsMrSwerve

The Leicester league win has been touted by many to have been the biggest sporting shock ever, in any sport. I think in terms of the odds (5000-1) it was the least likely thing to ever happen.

Any idea/opinion on if there have been bigger shocks than this, in any sport?

The closest in terms of winning the league is clough winning the first division with previously unfancied derby then forest. But still don't come really close to leicester.

Forest winning the title they year after they were promoted in 3rd place from Division 2.
Followed that up by winning the European cup twice.

It was a great achievement but there's no doubt that it was easier back then because the financial gap between the bigger teams and the rest was nowhere near as big.

Just four different teams have won the Premier League in the 20 years before Leicester. Eleven different teams won the League in the 20 years before Forest. It was a much more level playing field back then.

No current team comes close to the Liverpool side of the late 70s, early 80s, so to get promoted, win the title over Liverpool, knock them out of the European cup, and win it twice wil take some beating.

People just see the PL now in terms of money. Chelsea team cost so many hundreds of millions etc.

forest had Peter shilton at his peak.
Easily won them 10+ points in winning the league, and virtually single handed kept the second leg v liverpool 0-0.

I've been explaining to my seven year old son that Neuer great keeper that he is, is not the best of all time.

Cloughie had won the league previously and had some of his derby league winners with him.
In winning the European cup, a great achievement, they knocked out Liverpool and cologne so deserve full credit, but the other teams they beat were aek Athens, grasshoppers and malmo.
The champion's league is now on a completely different scale.

Did Man United's dominance of the 90's up until a year or two ago go unnoticed Down Under?

I wouldn't say Greece were massive outsiders, they had gone about 2 years unbeaten before the tournament. Denmark definitely were outsiders considering they didn't even qualify for the tournament in the first place. It was only the break up of Yugoslavia that allowed them in.

Greece were outsiders at 80/1 to win the Euros that year. But we're,a decent side who could and did give anyone a game at the time so it was hardly a shock that they managed to win it.

"current team".

The point I was making is that Forest won the title when Liverpool were in their prime.
Leicester have won the title this year when all the “big” clubs are in a state of disarray - not that I’m saying it’s not a great achievement.

Yep, Clough assembled a very good team, but similar to Leicester, without too many really big stars, Shilton was certainly one of the exceptions.

If Leicester win the Champions League, then that will be the biggest of all shocks.
