Grimes and Fulton on loan to a championship club for a season, Emnes to leave, leaving us Cork, Leon, Joe, Ki, Siggy and Fer. Happy with those six.
There is mention on the Mike VDH transfer article in the Mail that we are interested in Spurs' young midfielder / winger Alex Pritchard too.
Apart from signing Joe along with Fer and Alex as solid back up, I wouldn't waste money on the midfield area.
Priority now if we sign Mike VDH is a right back and two forwards as long as we keep Ayew.

The fact is that we have not replaced Shelvey permanently, fer was a short term option and now he has gone then we still have a void to gap.

Cork replaced Shelvey as a first team player, and we've been much better for it.

So are you saying we stuck a cork in the gap?

Beaverbrook reports the following links:

Danny Ings - Liverpool, Joey Allen - Liverpool, Bony - Man City, Alex Pritchard - Spurs, Enner Valencia - West Ham, Gregoire Defrel - Sassuolo, Chris Gunter - Reading, Gregory van der Wiel - PSG.

Then Fer takes Shelvey's place and i still see them signing Allen and wouldn't be surprised to see Ki remain.
I think they know Britton wont go on forever and see Allen as the long term successor, the opportunity is there now so it should be taken if possible.

I think we'll sign Fer and Allen and will sell Ki. I'm also not convinced on Grimes and think we may sign another advanced midfielder as well and let Grimes go.

I know nothing about talent spotting, but it never fails to surprise me how they can pay a million quid on a youngster after an assessment on site, then bring him to a set up at a higher level where his perceived talent fails to materialise [apparently].

And, going on from that, how will we get our million quid back?

Do they assess him on the training pitch at Fairwood after buying, and why don't they let them go on loan to as high a level club as possible, to see the talent develop?

I reckon that this youth system is flawed

It may be wise to avoid rushing to judgement on Grimes considering the standard of coaching he's had during his time here.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I don't see how promising youngsters are going to develop into good league players though, by living in a bubble and playing meaningless matches against like opposition. I've been to quite a few U21s games. and it just seems to be 'by the numbers' and, after about 80 mins, everything goes down a level. Can you imagine what it must be like for them to make the step up to a full blown PL game when called upon?

To me, its good practice to buy talent in for the U21s as opposed to trying to home grow it, but I wish we could see more of it at senior level, even if its at a different club.

I guess these things are a gamble. I just don't think it seems to be working as they hoped.

May be wrong of course.

I wondered why it was unpinned, surely its going to get very busy soon, especially when the tournos are over and holidays are done.

Conspiracy theory here. If Monk could be taking Bartley, it may be a good route for us to transfer others to Leeds who would do a good job for them. Like Emnes for example, or Fulton to bring him on a bit.
