100 years ago this week. Over a MILLION soldiers killed in 5 months of fighting. We are so lucky in our time to be able to vote with a referendum in Europe.
On a personal note,my grand dad was there and got cut off and surrounded in woodland along with his friend by a couple of Germans on horseback bearing pistols.
Luckily, they let them go as they could see how young they were...they were both 15 and lied about their age to get in as did many.
Life hangs by a slender thread for us all...I and my family would not be here today if it was nt for that act of kindness...

Will be at Mametz memorial next Thursday for the centenary. My grandfather was a lewis gunner in the south wales borderers.
Technical point on the op.It was over a million casualties (killed and wounded). Not a million killed. Ratio of approx 2 wounded for every one killed. A horrific number no matter what.

Fair comment.
I took the info from the headline of The Independent newspaper in the link.

I've been on to Kevin Johns about commemorating Mametz at our first home game next season. He's more than happy to do it.
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

19.240 killed on the first day. Death on a scale unimaginable these days. Compare to roughly 650 combat deaths between Iraq and Afghanistan combined over a decade.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I understand there is a 2 minutes silence on Friday, everone, whoever or wherever you are should take just 120 second to pay our heartfelt gratitude, that we owe these brave young men who gave their lives so we can do what we do today, the ultimate sacrifice. God bless their memories. RIP

My great grandfather fought in the Somme..somehow survived
80% of British soldiers did survive.
We must remember those that didn't return, but I believe we must also honour those that fought and did return. Men like your great grandfather and my grandfather. Men who came home and having experienced hell on earth went on to raise families with decency and honesty, rarely if ever speaking of the horrors they witnessed.

Well.. the Somme is considered the bloodiest battle in the twentieth century.. lambs to the slaughter if I remember the documentary I've watched.. pop your head up.. and you're likely to lose it.
