Why doesn't Montero start instead of the very predictable Routledge?

He is used as an impact player, perhaps because he cannot last ninety minutes.

Routledge was our best player last season along with Gylffi and maybe Ayew. He's started poorly this season and seems to be missing that quickness off the mark he's known for.He should get a few more games and if he doesn't improve then we may see Montero start although I don't think Guidolin is a fan.

Then he needs to train harder.

One would argue letting Routledge start a match and remain on the field for 2/3's of it has a much more significant impact than any impact Monterro has in 1/3.

Unfortunately, the impact Routledge provides is usually negative.

How far did Wayne manage to track back after he lost the ball before Vardy scored?

True, Amat was caught out with the ball over the top.

FG also needs a winger that knows how to drop and do the defensive side. Classic example today with Barrow ball watching as his full back steamed passed him.

Having one winger like that is possibly worth the risk early on, having montero doing the same on the other side will make things much harder.

IMO routs plays as he helps the balance of the team . Neither jeff or barrow know that defensive side of the game yet, though jeff has improved .
Playing both is maybe a bit of a gamble, especially away.

Just my take.

We have two defensive midfielders on the pitch. We shouldn't be sacrificing one of our attacking positions to play Routledge just because he's more inclined to track back than our alternative options. If Cork or Fer are incapable of covering the full back positions then they shouldn't be on the pitch.

There was one play that stands out in my mind from Montero from today:

He took the ball from Mahrez, brings it up the field 20 yards, loses it, and then falls down and walks back.

That explains why Montero doesn't play more – he's electric in attack, but when he loses the ball (or doesn't have it), he doesn't work to get it back. If he did, I think he'd be starting every week.

How does a midfielder run across to cover an opposition full back ?

Everyone needs to do the other side of the game, if midfielders move out wide to cover barrows fullback who covers the midfield ?

Exactly. Montero needs to learn to track back and help the full back.

But the side still looked twice as dangerous with Montero and Barrow together.

That may be true of Barrow much of the time, but not Montero.

Some of Jeff's best moments have come towards the end of games when he played the full 90'. Two seasons ago, when he terrorized Arsenal at the Liberty, is just one example.

Barrow is the one built to be an impact sub, due to his endurance issues. Not Montero.

Routledge was way off par today, which is worrying because he was even worse at Burnley. Are you seriously blaming him for not catching up with a long ball played over the top to one of the quickest strikers in the country though?

It was well worth it when he came on. Apart from the fact that Routledge had been totally ineffective, we were losing. Playing Montero and Barrow opens the game right up. They will beat defenders and get crosses in, but we will be caught on the break time after time. Absolutely no harm doing it when you are losing and don't look like scoring. I wouldn't start matches that gung-ho though

Montero needs a run of games. He will tear teams apart if given the chance.

Yep, and yet people continue to use defence as an excuse for playing him over Montero.

Granted, "the best defence is a good offence" is an annoying cliche'. But it's fair to say that the best defence involves not giving the freaking ball away every time you get it.

Routledge lacks the pace to beat his man. He naively tried to do so today and lost the ball leading to us conceding the first.

Should always be Montero and Barrow starting now and really we should have bought another winger.

I'll say it again, this whole Routledge is a better defensive player is an absolute myth. He doesn't do alot at either end of the pitch.

His great games, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle etc., came when he started.
Should start before Routledge for me.

Agree that he can't play 90mins. As someone stated, he should train harder.

The question is not about Routledge or Montero. The question is why we're still reliant on either.

Routledge has been a cracking player for us but should have been upgraded on by now and his performances over the last two years haven't been consistently good enough. Montero has lived on 2/3 electric performances and the occasional lofted cross in all the time he's been here. I'd rather play Dyer than the pair of them at the moment. At least he'll put a shift in.

We badly needed a top, top quality wide player/AM this summer to replace Ayew. Looks like we're not going to get one.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
