Mobile Phones and Driving 19:08 - Sep 15 with 1739 views | Nogginthenog | Article in the Daily Mirror demanding harsher punishments for those caught using a mobile phone whilst driving. I think they are right and those caught need at least a 3 month ban. Several recent cases involved deaths of people due to inattention. Anyone else think the current fines are not working??

That's part of the problem in relying solely on the law and harsher punishments to resolve issues like this. To enforce effectively requires huge resource either from the police or an army of civil enforcement types. Resources that simply aren't and never will be available. The law can only ever be part of the solution. Education and culture change is the key but that takes time.

Mobile Phones and Driving on 20:09 - Sep 15 with 1132 views | monmouth | Sometimes get the bus intoBristol for work and some of the things people do are amazing. Phones, texting, make up, reading magazines, talking and looking at people in the back, doing nails. It's incredible. the only thing I've not seen is any gratuitous sexual activity. Maybe next week...

Well I believe eating at the wheel isn't legal, so smoking should be in that category. Totally agree.

It's not illegal to eat while driving. You could get done for driving without due care and attention or similar though if you caused an accident while peeling the wrapper off your Mars bar.

Agree with mandatory fitment of bluetooth, technology has to play a part in any solution. Education doesn't appear to be working. I think most drivers take the risk as they are unlikely to be caught. Texting while driving is completely foolish.

I thought I heard some time back of a driver prosecuted for eating an apple or a kit-Kat, can't remember what? It was given some press time because it was, on the face of it, ridiculous.

Mobile Phones and Driving on 21:20 - Sep 15 with 1012 views | morningstar | I think looking in the rear view mirror should be an offence as your not focusing on what happens in front of you. Same as looking straight ahead. You're unaware of what's going on behind you, and you could easily cause a serious accident.

He might have caused an accident or something, I don't know. The act of eating itself while driving isn't against the law.

That's why you've got two eyes. Keep one looking ahead and the other looking in the mirror.

It is if you think properly about it. The offence is using a mobile phone while driving. Copper can prove you were using a mobile, even PAYG, from checking your phone usage records with the mobile phone provider. Now. Can you prove in court that were using it hands free, should the copper get arsey with you and book you? My mate couldn't. Everyone who knows him, knew he'd only speak "hands free." Decided to take the copper on, with plenty of character statements about him usng a bluetooth headset constantly (all thrown out- no actual witnesses) and got his 3 week licence suspension. Plus a heavier fine It is a mandatory suspension of the bus/ truck entitlement for being caught on a mobile Nobody is that important to have to use a mobile while driving. If someone rings you, pull over somewhere safe and ring them back. Or just turn your phone off altogether when you're driving. Simples
