It's the Chinese money innit? The EPL can't really grumble about it they've harvested the best players from all over the world in recent years by offering big money to players. Now there's a country who will pay considerably more. Karma is a bitch.

Chelsea were happy enough when they were top of the money tree, buying up everyone's players and then not playing them. What goes around comes around.

Indeed. Not so sure about many of the players however who just want to grab all they can get. True supporters will certainly will be on board and I can't see crowds dropping. It will only be temporary. They gold grabbers will be back once the whole Chinese shooting match goes tits up as it surely will.

I'll have a think about feeling sorry for them a minute.....nope can't do it, reap what you sew springs to mind. Modern football for all its joys and plus points has a really dark and downright greedy side that should hang it head in shame.

Feeling sorry for clubs who would happily do the same to get what they want if the boot was on the other foot so to speak get exactly what they deserve and to be honest out of all the clubs in the prem it couldn't have happened to two more deserving clubs. Like someone else said karma is indeed a bitch. Next up moan city Liverpool and man united please karma gods if you would be so kind.

Yep, karma is a bitch. It's been happening for years. The handful of the teams at the top of the Premiership have just dropped down the pecking order.

Global salary cap. Any extra payments made illegal and if found a banning from football for 2 years.

Football will heal itself almost overnight. The game would be cheaper for the fans, the TV money would be going to the clubs and communities rather than in the greedy players and agents pockets.

Indeed. Chelsea are quite happy to do it to us with Llorente to have him as a benchwarmer.
They can't crib when other teams then entice they players

Prem teams invested in players to compete in Europe, there was a tangible goal in place.

China are throwing money like crazy - not 10% increases but massively blowing up the market in order to become a player in world football.

Of course they did but it's like us being where we are now and creaming off the better players from the Championship and Leagues 1 and 2.
"IF" we were relegated and the tables were then turned, we could grumble all we like but it would be a case of what goes around, comes around.

MLS - trundling along, repeating old problem of paying big money for has beens.

China - spending sh*tloads of quality managers / coaches, paying way over the top for players still capable of playing at top levels.

I've zero doubt China will overtake USA internationally within two decades. The far higher quality of coaching will pay dividends for their domestic players.

A lot of people say they would play for their club for free if the opportunity arose, however a professional footballer has a short career and very few people in other professions would turn down the opportunity to double their salary.

Football is,different though, and a footballer already earning £10-£15m a year playing in the PL, Europe and internationally, who decides to go to play in China simply for the money is beyond my mindset.

What can't you do on the money they are already on?

That's always happened though - top division teams, seeing a quality player lower down have always taken a punt unless there have been real doubts about the ability / mentality.

British sides were always competitive in Europe. The Heysel related suspension set British sides back by a few years, other nations changed things up - Barcelona and Real spent big, backed by the banks ( let's be honest, illegal subsidies really ).

The arms race began, options were either be competitive or fall far behind.

What China are doing which is interesting is taking the sport from basically nothing to competitive in a very short space of time. Where MLS have their draft, so players coming through college with mostly North American coaches buying in has beens for name recognition, China have instead splashed the cash for coaches, players still capable at highest levels.

Basically, China are doing in 3-4 years what most top European nations did in 20.

Costa is on 4m a year after tax by all accounts.

30m after tax? I doubt many people would turn down that money.

For all the comments of what can't he do with the money he's on now, it's also the case of what could he do over and above what he does now with that money.

Many Brazilian footballers use their money to invest in improving life in Brazil, for example. If Costa was that way inclined, that extra money could improve a hell of a lot of people's lives.

Until China drops its strict caps on the number of foreign players teams can use I wouldn't worry.

They're paying so much because getting absolute top quality from their 4+1 (or whatever it is) makes a massive difference, it's not like they're building squads of 18 Oscars. 4 or 5 of each starting 11 are frankly awful domestic players that wouldn't make it in League Two (and the +1 is often a big clogging Aussie centreback).

The overall playing level is so low that big money or not, most top level professionals won't stay there long. It's as big a career-killer as MLS, only 100x more awful to live there.

It is easy to envisage that the premier league will be hoist by its own petard. Television money, players, coaches moving to Asia where the crowds are much bigger and emotional in their nature, and all the wealth will be concentrated. It will happen if the will is there to organise it....and what is happening with Costa is a hell of a statement of intent.

Unlike the US which has never cared about the game, there may simply be too much demand and purchasing power to stop it. It's probably just a question of how long it takes. There comes a tipping point where you no longer have to pay these grotesque figures, merely outrageous ones like the PL does currently.

That happens, and the PL will become like the Dutch league. Personally I can't wait for the whole circus, and the w*nky money men, to f**k off elsewhere.

Costa has as much interest in Brazil as we have, he changed allegiance to Spain to play International for them rather than Brazil, Costa cares about one person and that's himself.

Chinese bigger and emotional ?
Have you been to the Far East

I was there in November and a more dispassionate group of people (unless they are gambling in the casinos) you could not wish to meet.
I really enjoyed the company of all the Asians we met, but they would no doubt wait until the end of the game then clap politely.
I know I'm being OTT, but I don't see football as a game the Chinese will take to their hearts

Fair enough. It's true I was thinking more of Asia in general, and was going by the crowds I've seen at friendlies. As to the Chinese, I agree as individuals they are polite and restrained, but that needs an outlet. Could be football if they get a taste for it, and realise that they won't be shot for expressing it.

Maybe more personal hope than anything. I'd love the pumped up lump of shit that is the bloated Premier league to have some air let out of it. It disgusts me.

The level chelsea were at before premier league money kicked in.

Very little sympathy for their fans other than for those who were on the west terrace that day who probably can't afford tickets now.

Funny.
You could dig up any number of TV clips of the Swans circa 1975 and post the same thing.
Many of our fans are affected either economically or by physically being unable to get tickets in the same way as Chelsea's old fans are

I'd disagree it's a career killer. Costa could stay 2-3 years, still be in his prime.

Those domestic players are learning not just from experienced, quality players but also from high quality managers / coaches. Big difference from MLS.

Games I've seen, of course there's improvement needed but the standard is at least equal if not above MLS.
