The NHS 21:10 - Jan 21 with 14344 viewsexiledclaseboy

I've debated long and hard about posting this but I decided it was worth it as we've seen many threads and posts decrying the NHS and I wanted to redress the balance.

On 12 December my wife went for a routine examination which revealed "something nasty" in her bowel. No symptoms at all, simply a follow up from an unrelated problem from about a month before. Biopsies were taken and we were called back a few days before Christmas to have it confirmed that she has bowel cancer. She had a scan a few days after Christmas to check the cancer hadn't spread (thankfully it hadn't) and that was confirmed last Monday. Yesterday she had the operation to remove the tumour. She's now recovering in Morriston Hospital.

So from initial suspicion of something sinister on 12 December to probably life saving operation five weeks later on 20 January. We haven't had to worry about money and the care at every stage so far has been superb.

I realise that we can all only speak from our personal experiences and that not everyone's will mirror our own. But there is ours. Thank you, NHS.

If it weren't for the marvellous care I've received from the NHS initially for my cancer and then for a pulmonary embolism during treatment I wouldn't be here now.

Best wishes to Mrs ECB for a full recovery. A close friend of mine diagnosed with bowel cancer at the same time I was diagnosed with myeloma is well along the road to recovery now.

Stay strong together :-)

We have Swansea in our hearts and blood ECB, in this era we need to talk as people about things that many previous generations ignored or shrugged off.

So many lives are being affected more than ever it seems.

What I am thankful in reading your post is that firstly your wife is recuperating well and has seemingly had good care, then secondly someone reading this may now take action if they or a loved one/ friend isn't " feeling right"

I wish I could be more eloquent and articulate, but acting early may really, really hold the key in the fight against this bloody disease.

Much love to you and your wife and you know where we are on here.

Just to echo Dicky's post and add...

All the best to you and your wife.

Tell your wife to makesure she does the correct exercises so that the sufficient amount of oxygen can get into the bowel area..

Relapses are mainly due to the oxygen pathways to the bowel being blocked..doing the correct exercises will realign the pathways so that sufficient oxygen can tackle the sensitive area.. tell her to take her time though.. too much oxygen can poison the sensitive area.. and also have a relapse.

Cancer is either caused by a lack of oxygen
.. or f*cking too much..

It's almost like 'greed'.. you need money.. But if you become greedy your poison.

It's a weird phenomenon the world.. everything is so similar.

And makesure you cut down on your smoking ECB.. don't just quit.. gradually reduce your intake.. for your wives sake.. because you're pretty much f*cked anyway.. every long term smoker's autopsy reveals glaring organ failures due to cancerous activity..

But you probably know that anyway.. you're just hoping to survive!

Sincere good wishes to Mrs ECB for a speedy recovery, I've always been a great believer in the NHS, but it has suffered badly because of austerity and we all know what happened at Mid-Staffs NHS Trust. My one bad NHS experience concerned an elderly male friend with terminal cancer, and an admittedly difficult attitude, whom I thought was treated very poorly by ward staff before his death. Against this my elderly mother and wife have both received first-class treatment in recent years. Some facilities in Swansea are surprisingly good. One might suppose that something like the multi-parametric MRI scan that was in the news a couple of days ago as a breakthrough for men with high PSA results would be out of reach here. However I had this about a year ago at Singleton, and was happy to learn that nothing sinister was found..

Best wishes to you and the wife, great news that she is on the mend.

Anyone that wants to see how wonderful the front line staff of the NHS are, catch up with the current series "Hospital" on BBC2 (i think) bit of a tear jerker. Absolute heroes most of them.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

I hope everything will turn out well for you and your missus.

As for the NHS, you are correct, it is a personal experience thing, and unfortunately in this time of sensationalism, only the negative stories are picked up on.

Over the past four/five years, I have unfortunately had to deal with a lot of issues with my own health, and have a mixed bag of response to how it has been dealt with. One thing I will say, when I have been on ward and in the hospitals themselves, I can't have a complaint of how they have dealt with my situation (food aside), the ground staff were excellent, the surgeons, the anaesthetists, the nurses, porters etc., made the experience as comfortable as possible.

The issues I had were more with administration, which included being sent to see the wrong specialist three times, causing 18 months of further waiting. I understand my case is complex, and in fairness it isn't a priority in the sense it isn't life threatening at the current time, but it can cloud your judgement.

My mother in law was diagnosed and told she required an operation as soon as possible. It originally got cancelled twice, once on the morning of the operation, the other, two days before due to a lack of beds. The only person in North Wales capable of doing the operation then moved hospitals and so she went from being next on the list to behind those on the new hospital's list. Stressful indeed. It was now a 90 minute trip to the new hospital instead of 10 minutes from the first. When you have to be there by 7.30am it makes a difference, especially for the patient who wasn't very well. The operation was then cancelled a further 3 times, twice again on the day and so I got in touch with both our 2 local AM's and our MP who got in the ear of the head of the health board.

I didn't really care who I upset by now and within 2 weeks the operation was finally performed.
The staff there were great and we can't thank them enough but what went on beforehand was a joke and if it was ever to happen again I wouldn't be so reasonable or understanding. It is a sad state of affairs but you really do have to look after number one because no none else will.

I wish a speedy recovery to your wife.

The NHS is the greatest institution we have .

Remarkable people putting themselves out there to save people 24/7 .
It's our institution , they need to stop privatising it .

Privatisation means profit before care.

Nice to here some good news for once ECB .

Best wishes .

Good to hear so many positive outcomes.

I would very much doubt if anyone here does not owe the NHS and its staff a debt of gratitude for previous or perhaps ongoing treatment.

However I'm afraid this means very little to anyone or anyones families who have been let down badly by their experiences though either neglect, incompetence or administrative error.

There can be no doubt that there will be a certain amount of incompetence by medical staff or administrative staff in such a gigantic organisation at levels, I would imagine no higher nor less than in any other field or industry, this I'm afraid is a fact of life ( or death possibly in this case) if you, I or anyone else were the victim of this I feel that it would be right to expose those situations and shout about them from the highest heights.

if we accept the fantastic work that in general the NHS and it's staff carry out on a daily basis then I'm sure that we all have massive sympathy for those very staff who in my experience are crying out in frustration at their hands being tied and their work being hampered by the lack of resources or proper organisation that they know can make such a huge difference to patient care.

It's these staff who are being let down as much as the patients in many instances.

And that I'm afraid is mainly down to the decisions of politicians of all political hues.

Clasey I hope she makes a swift recovery. The NHS has many faults but it is a service that simply cannot be left to rot. If it wasn't for the brilliant work of midwives and doctors my boy probably wouldn't be here today!
