Too many jobs in Cardiff 18:47 - Feb 21 with 934 viewstrampie

Just reading the comments following an article on traffic congestion in Cardiff
http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/stats-show-cardiffs-traffic-congest
Why the unionist parties like Labour and the Conservatives are so centralist I don't know, Plaid are all for spreading the wealth and Government jobs all over the country while some think that the other parties are just playing to the larger population areas which can seem like trying to buy votes, which obviously would be very poor if it was the case.

Trampie, trampie, trampie...

It's not a jobs issue.

It's an issue that to get from one side of Cardiff to the other there are at most four main routes. Council want traffic off the roads so make driving as inconvenient as possible.

I know you want to frame your "Plaid so much better than everyone" argument to every conceivable topic, but c'mon...

Yes its a jobs issue that is why people are passing comment on the amount of jobs in Cardiff in the comments section about the article.

The provincials are going to rise up at this rate, don't forget Owain Glyndwr burned Swansea and Cardiff amongst other places down to the ground, the Chartists marched on Newport from the hills and the valleys, the Rebecca riots in West Wales etc, don't underestimated the villagers to mobilise themselves.

I tend not to read the comments. Mostly because they tend to be ill informed b*llocks.

Numerous streets in Cardiff have crawled trafficwise for ages. it's down to the transport policy of the council more than anything.

Example : Gabalfa Interchange. Citing a record of fatalities and accidents ( which FoI requests undermined ), council determined that it would make sense to have left hand turn lanes there. Impact being that traffic coming off the roundabout aiming to turn left then have the issue of traffic in the left lane... been more good luck than planning there haven't been more accidents there.

Putting controllable traffic lights up there to regulate the flow of traffic, the utterly reasonable and sensible idea was never considered.

You are not listening....hmm..... the roads cant cope very well with the volume of traffic because of all the jobs that are in Cardiff, jobs that in some cases could have gone elsewhere and jobs in other cases where offices have been closed around Wales all relocating to one supersized large office in Cardiff.

You are not thinking...hmm...council want people using public transport meaning they have gone out of their way to make driving across Cardiff as difficult as possible. Has to be the volume of jobs according to trampie and not the fact that transport planning in Cardiff has been abysmal for decades.

Bluey would obviously know more than us about congestion in Cardiff, where the hot spots are and how they might be addressed.

But Trampie is making a more general point. The closure of offices, and the loss of jobs around Wales that he's referring to, are the HMRC ones. The WAG and UK government's plan is to transfer around 800 jobs from Swansea, Wrexham and Caernarfon (places that are in dire need of such good, well paid, secure jobs) and, along with the 2,100 that currently exist in Llanishen, create one supersize office in the centre of Cardiff to accommodate them. And also create around 700 new jobs taking the total to around 3,500.

Bluey refers to four main routes across Cardiff. If you add another 3,500 jobs right in the centre of Cardiff it's inevitable that a lot are going to travel to work by car and bus making congestion on those roads worse.

Trampie's right in saying that Plaid talk about spreading the wealth around Wales but my opinion about this is, forget about politics or political parties. It's simply not right. If there's any specific place in Wales that is least in need of this enormous financial boost, that place is Cardiff.

And, on top of that, by saying that they want to site the jobs in the centre of Cardiff it ensures that another enormous development will happen, the size of DVLA, and the developer will be guaranteed rental for decades in the most expensive rental area in Wales.

And who will be paying that rent ? All of US.

Trampie's point about jobs going to Cardiff I don't necessarily disagree with.

What I disagree with is linking the two issues. Traffic around Cardiff has got progressively worse over the last 20 years due to a desire to make driving cars as difficult as possible, to push people into public transport. That's not job related, it's poor traffic management related.

Blueytheblue its not just trampie saying, its the people that have taken the time to reply to the article, they are saying why there is congestion and that is because there are to many jobs in Cardiff.

We know exactly what you mean regarding traffic management problems Bluey. We've just got rid of the bendy bus remember.

I can't argue that traffic management hasn't been a shambles in Cardiff which is what you're saying. But you also can't argue that putting extra traffic onto already badly managed streets isn't going to exacerbate the problems.
