"According to figures published by the UK government last year, about 850 people regarded as a national security concern have gone to become fighters in the Middle East.
Of those, just under half have returned to the UK and approximately 15% are dead."

Why on earth are any of these things allowed back on to these islands? Remind me again whose interests that corrupt, degenerate rabble at Westminster are supposed to represent?

It is time to counter sue the individuals (lawyers?) responsible for the £1,000,000 pay out and get U.K taxpayers money back!

The majority of those 850 are probably fighting for ISIS, but a fair number (how many, I wonder) will be fighting along side Kurdish fighters against ISIS.

The Middle East is in the biggest mess it's ever been in, and, surprise surprise, historically, grubby British fingers have been in that particular pie for centuries.

Afzal Ashraf, a former counter-terrorism adviser to the United States in Iraq, told the BBC this incident demonstrated that "some of the people in Guantanamo Bay were up to no good".
"It also throws into question some of the organisations that were supporting him, that brought him back [from Guantanamo].
"Some of them were associated a little too closely with this radical ideology, and they use the legal system - freedoms of speech, the importance of the rule of law - in order to subvert some of our systems in the UK and elsewhere."

So many 'useful idiots' sucked it up and are still sucking it up.

How very dare you, these are innocent individuals, not criminals, none of them liked the colour orange either.

Maybe it would have been better to have a trail and follow a due process of law and pass sentence if found guilty appropriate to his crime all those years ago.

Perhaps everyone in the UK who seeks to subvert the state, destroy the state and supports it's enemies abroad... should be locked up for 'High Treason'.
FOR LIFE.
After all, it's the law.

Can you imagine the outcry from the usual suspects in this country?
Some on here would be apoplectic if the rule of law on Treason were to be enforced...you know who you are.

Some people's attitude to enforcement of the law is similar to their attitude on democracy.

Or they could just prosecute him now he's done a crime.......o no bit late for that isn't it.
It's obvious he was a clean, good upstanding citizen when we gave him £1,000,000 of tax payers money otherwise he would not have got it would he?
I wonder how many more of his type got these "payments"?

It gets interesting at paragraph 4.
The UK government would have been aware of this information on his return from Guantanamo.
He was most likely paid £1m compo as hush money as they didn't wish the case to go to court...why?
Because the information revealed in para 4 would have been revealed in court and most likely came from a British spy involved in Al Qaida.
We protected our operative/s.
This is logical.

However, all those tossers who claimed that those in Guantanamo were innocent and claimed that the US and UK governments had something to be ashamed about have been exposed as hopelessly naive.
We were dealing with people who had declared WAR on our states and our societies. The military treated these people as enemy combatants in a WAR.
In short they were protecting you, I and all these idiots who wish to side with our ENEMIES.

Whoever was the Home Secretary at the time must have been blind not to see that "Fiddler" was a threat to British security, and then let him get £1000,000 compo.

Probably now sitting in the House of Lords still doing his best to f*ck this country up.

Worse than that, Flash. The details of any payment are sketchy at best but it appears that his compo was paid by the Tory/LibDem coalition in 2010. Theresa May would have been Home Secretary then. Although I doubt she'd have had much to do with it. Sounds like more of a Foreign Office thing.
