This has gripped my siht* for a long time now.

Why do commentators insist on pronouncing Angel Rangel's name incorrectly?!

The pronounce it "Anjel Ranjel"

Why hasn't someone corrected them?

I didn't realise that but I should have been paying more attention because I recall hearing that Lodz (remember them?) was pronounced 'Woods". Vowensa for Walesa was odd too (remember Lech, anyone?)

I went to a building site about 18 months ago and the site manager's name was written Lucas and I was told he was Polish. When I got there and asked him if he was "Woocash", he smiled and just said "Wow, yes!" and thanked me for getting it right. Found him extremely helpful after that.

I think the Ang-hel, Anjel thing is just one of the differences between Regular Spanish and Catalan pronunciations.

My wife goes nuts every time formula one is on and they pronounce it "Vettel" whereas it's really "Fettel".

It's PRO-ven not PROO-ven and there's no n in restaurateur, no x in espresso and no d in tenterhooks.

When he first signed for the club I met him out in Spain on our pre-season tour. One of the first things I asked him was how to pronounce his name (As it had been debated on the forums at the time)

He told me it's An-hel Ran-hel, where the 'h' is more like a clearing your throat sound.

Edit
He didn't mention the clearing the throat part, of course

Spanish - An-hel Ran-hel

Catalan - An-jel Ran-jel

He is from a Catalan region so Ran-jel is correct.

And it's champing at the bit, not chomping.

Supercede I believe can be spelt either way. I think I looked this up in a dictionary years ago and saw that either was acceptable. Spell check allows either if that's anything to go by.

I think he's struggling with this thread to be honest...

Champing - yep. Similarly, stamping not stomping (ground).

With usage over time, incorrect spellings become acceptable. Like intravert is always spelled introvert for eggzample.

Pronounced the same. Free reign is now so widely used it has become the norm.
