Agreed. Bit of a damning indictment on the quality of the Welsh Prem though.

Good student teams are conference standard which is where the welsh league is.

Really good ones are league standard. Depends on how much they want it.

The quality is there but a 40 year corporate career may be better than 10 years as a low pro and continue to play amateur league.

Massive Congrats Chris. Hope the boys get there.

"If you were to ask a football fan to describe their ideal player, “well educated” is unlikely to be near the top of the list of attributes."

You wouldn't say that about students of Cardiff Met either.

Cardiff Met is a lot better than South Wales or Trinity St Davids. Solid enough teaching and some ok research.

Nice to see Chris doing so well and good luck to them. Too few South Wales teams in that league

Ponty has to be one of the worst "universities" in the history of the world....and they took over Newport. How bad must they have been.

Never been great. One of my technician"s sons goes there. Could have gone somewhere decent too but wanted to do some stupid contrived wildlife biology degree rather than doing a good degree and then specialising. Welsh School of Mines and treforest tech

Debatable. UWTSD finish higher in plenty of categories...they're on a par I'd say. Research though, UWTSD does fall down a bit.

I was only teasing anyway. I've taught (and still teach) at these universities and there's some cracking students. This 'met' business gets a hard time, and it's unwarranted.

More a reflection of the Welsh sector being so poor at present. Poor management and poor oversight have not helped the little guys, aber and Bangor have gone backwards. Cardiff is not as good as it thinks, though still the best with Swansea fast developing into a force.

I thought Swansea was now rated higher than Cardiff and is now deemed the best in Wales.

We're on the up. Swansea is higher ranked than Cardiff in this year's Good University Guide, and won 'Welsh University of the Year', but Cardiff had an overall better result in the last Research Excellence Framework (2014). Both were great climbers in REF - Cardiff climbing from 22nd to 5th nationally, and Swansea the biggest climber nationally from 52nd to 26th.

Cardiff is bigger and 'better' overall still, their 5th place in research nationally is a fantastic achievement, but Swansea is flying. Bangor stagnating and Aber is really struggling.

There's a lot of variability in this between different subjects. Bottom line is we now have 2 top quality Unis in Wales, rather than just Cardiff. Swansea needs to sustain this over the next 5-6 years to prove it's a genuine force and the last few years isn't a blip. The new campus should help with this.

It has fairly dynamic leadership and is very ambitious. The singleton campus was a limitation. Needs to attract more research funding to fly

'Uni snobbery' is pointless when the name of the university carries very little in the modern day, you can go to Cambridge and sit on your arse for three years thinking you've got a job on the name and degree alone, or you can go to the so called 'lower ranked' universities and prove your skills and worth in the market. I know which the majority of employers would look more favorably on. Horses for courses.

It's the individual who gets the job, not the university they went to.

Well yeah, until the students turn up and realise they're on Fabian Way and not on the prom. I'd be mightily pissed off if it were me...

From what I'm told, Cardiff is still viewed from the other side of the bridge as the only real Welsh competitor to Bristol & Bath in the prestige stakes (ie the "I went to..." test). I'd be thrilled if Swansea were ever to seriously threaten that. History and tradition takes a lot of climbing over, whatever transient tables say.

Except of course that the student "sitting on their arse" in Cambridge would have needed at least 3 A grades to get in to the best university in the UK while you can get into the "university" of South Wales on far less. Any good employer uses this to gauge graduate recruits.

3 A levels or relevant work experience and references in their chosen field.

Cardiff is a red brick university whereas Swansea is not. I have noticed quite a few employers state they only want applications from red brick university graduates.

No matter how well Swansea progresses in terms of research, outside of Wales the only university taken seriously is Cardiff, unfortunately. Raising the entry requirements for courses would help as well as placing no importance on the Welsh bacc.

Cardiff is the only Welsh Russell Group University - the group of the older research intensive universities. There is no reason Swansea can not emulate Warwick which although outside the group is better than many in it as is Surrey. Both 1960s beasts. If anyone thinks which university makes no difference then they are deluded. Civil service and the city are dominated by Oxbridge, the big three in London and a few traditionally upper class places like Durham. In research and academia it is much harder to get on outside the Russell group and a few select others. Not impossible , but harder.
