I am putting all my faith... 23:55 - Apr 22 with 2093 viewsexiledclaseboy

... in a liberal resurgence that probably isn't going to happen.

I despair. I yearn for the days when we debated the minutiae. Now we're debating philosophies. Extremes are winning the argument and I have no time for that. Extremes aren't tolerant. They aren't liberal and they do not provide a sensible future. Extremes appeal to prejudice and intolerance. Britain has always always always been an essentially liberal country, regardless of which box you put your cross in.

Please let's keep it that way.

I'm sorry to say that you should be prepared to be disappointed.

The extremity of the bell curves are seen as cool and hip these days. It won't change any time soon.

I've long said this essentially the UK is conservative with a small 'c'

People far more right wing than I have been voting labour without a second thought for years. This 'progressive'' majority bollox has been doing the rounds for years it just isn't true.

Brexit has brought ideologies to the surface it has made people feel genuinely comfortable to declare their true hidden views. This Country is not what many thought it was, I think we've been kidding ourselves.

We are a Nation not comfortable in our own skin and want to relive the past, we crave the old comforts.

Just wanting ever more money for the NHS doesn't make this Country left wing, finally people are waking up to this fact

Look at you and I now. We're both in despair. We've spent years debating minutiae, tinkering around the edges. We're both liberals. Essentially centrists. Live and let live. We'll disagree on policies and some principles for sure. You're centre right and I'm centre left. I can live with that.

But the extremes are taking over. Intolerance and hatred has become the mainstream. I know you hate this as much as I do.

Yep we are the majority but we have nowhere to go. Strange state of affairs.

My hope is for a realignment - I actually think a Tory landslide is healthy now, I think it may finally cause the much needed changes.

Centrism is harder to argue because it's dull, it's more nuanced it doesn't have the certainties of extremes it will take time to get back in vogue.

Maybe it needs to get worse before it gets better.

My pal and I were sat chuckling earlier as some of the youngsters turned an instinctive 'eyes right' at the Sovereign's portrait as they made their way back from the bar to their seats These were obviously junior soldiers or kids on their first home leave from basic training to drill as instinctively as that. Made us proud and a bit jealous, really.

When I came on here afterward browsing about amidst the accumulation of recent leftist posts it occurred to me that these kids and the the ones I hadn't long left had just as well be on different planets. Considering how small a geographic space we inhabit the 'them' and 'us' dichotomy is astonishing.

Andrew. Britain has not ' always, always, always been an essentially liberal country at all, despite the best efforts of the comprehensive system's inculcation. I'm still here, so are the lads I've just shaken hands with and said goodnight to, so are all the youngsters who have gone to town.

Stubbornly traditional, patriotic, workingmen. The Islington set's bogey men.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

I may be wrong but I don't think you understand what ECB means. I may be completely wrong and apologies to the both of you if I am.

What I think he meant is that we are a liberal democracy. A liberal democracy doesn't mean a dreadlocked kid chucking bottles at policemen.

It means a liberal democracy.

This explains it better.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_democracy

Generally centrist, not going to the extremes of right or left.

Unfortunately things seem to be going the other way these days. The extremists seem to have taken over. The Labour party is committing electoral suicide and your type is on the rise.

For anyone who believes in liberal democracy, it's a worrying time. Britain has decided it doesn't like foreign people living here. America has voted for a reality TV idiot who has courted the KKK and various other white nationalist groups. The fascist, collaborationist NF is on the rise in France and the Labour party has gone all mental communist bollocks.

Obviously this pleases people like you. You like extremism.

Others of us are worried by it.

Once again, sorry if I'm wrong Clase.

I don't know if ECB was thinking along those lines but you are right, the difficulty at the moment is that there is no opposition as Labour have returned to the 70's without recognising the lessons of the 70's and most people who lived through that period have moved into the centre right having prospered under Tory governments.

I can see Labour losing yet another election and losing the Valley heartlands for the first time. Ironically I think Plaid who are more socialist than Labour on most things will benefit in Wales, UKIP are spent and the Liberals are returning to their rightful place as the nice people in third place.

Life is an adventure or nothing at all.

Have to agree.

There's a rapidly growing extreme ideology taking over Britain and Europe.

The number of adherents nearly doubling in 10 years according the Gruaniad. Soon to be a majority.

It's intolerant, violent, misogynist, homophobic and anti-democratic.

Glad the OP has been red-pilled and finally seen the light.

Ooh clever. Actually it's not, it's typically trite from you. Y'know what though, Dai, the yearning I mentioned in the OP also fully applies to the group you're obsessed with hating. Of course it does. I just don't subscribe to your view that all of Britain's problems can be laid at that group's feet.

I don't believe that and have never posted such. Probably made as many posts attacking the Tories and the rich.

Stop posting extreme views.

In Wales we have a quite basic choice.

Wales-shire principality, perpetual Tory rule from london, illegal wars, bankers bonus's, nuclear missiles, bbc royal correspondants, and anti-immigrant.

Or

A free wales taking its place in Europe, governments we vote for, no wars, no bankers, no nuclear weapons, derek the weatherman, and inclusive civic nationalism. Just like Scotland and Ireland.

We have been very conditioned of course, but its the second option that is the normal state across the globe.

Always noticeable the way that when you argue for liberalism it's that more metropolitan element that is used as a weapon by those advocating more hardline certainties.

loh.

Beteeen the two of us,I quite enjoyed some protests.

Downside was ,often, as I briefed my troops , an ACPO officer was on my shoulder and in my ear

It was all about not dropping into the shite and not doing anything the Press could use against the Police.

I'm not sure how Plod manage now in the full glare of mobile phones etc.

Went to a reunion of old colleagues from the 80s when posted at Admiral Street,L8. We all agreed we d be pretty much doing a jail term if we did what we did in those days , not violence wise not legally but the fact we arrested so many so often .Many of these are now dead, shot ,stabbed or maimed . I was lucky to have only be hospitalised twice
