Just changed a few strings on my Guild D55 and note that ,although fresh out of a Martin packet, they are clearly stained and do not sound zingy new
Wasn't aware strings in a packet seemingly go off.

If they were stored someplace damp and cold then like all metal it will corrode. Same thing happened to me a while ago as i bought a few packs from a closing down sale. |  |

Many string manufacturers make a big thing about the string being packaged in an airtight pack.
As to the expensive guitar I'm sure that my good friend Richard will confirm that the fingers are more important than the guitar.... |  |

D'Arrario and GHS are good. I wouldn't put lighter than 10s on an acoustic.
