Considering he passed away forty years ago I'd say the old Tupelo Flash's popularity is holding up remarkably well.

"Jailhouse Rock" was my first 78 single in the late 50's.

Still got it somewhere.

Great post Darran.

The younger generations care less and less about history in all forms, and music is just a byproduct of that. It's only natural.

Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, etc. - all the greats have experienced this. Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra; millenials don't even know who these people are for the most part, much less their music. The internet has allowed for everyone to know and experience everything, all the time, and the key is in capturing people's attention long enough to sell them something.

And for all of Elvis' team of marketers, he never had "hitmakers" like David Guetta and Skrillex and all their funky little gadgets to work with, and his music doesn't quite capture the "imaginations" of the youth in the same way as them.

Key quote: "Maybe we should just accept that Elvis's moment has passed."

Sadly, indeed.

I jest of course.

I'm sure he wasn't shit. Just not my cup of tea at all.

I did like Suspicious Minds though. That was brilliant.

When The Fine Young Cannibals did it.

I imagine I've just f*cked up my chance of me and Lohengrin ever being best buddies now.

I was brought on his music, due to my mothers obsession. I've got a pretty decent Elvis vinyl collection as it goes, just nothing to play it on . Love a bit of Elvis , Eddie Cochran, the Everlys, Buddy Holly and Billy Fury when I'm in the mood.

*coughs*

This is the original. The great Reggie Young played guitar on this and Elvis's version.
Mark James also wrote The Letter for The Box Tops.

*gets anorak*

These are pretty damn good

The choir in Alderman Davies learned "Falling In Love With You" as one of their songs for a competition this year.
I went to see a tribute act in Vegas (good too) and there were a lot of youngsters there, so I'm sure the legacy will live longer than lots of us posting today will.

Well dug our Warwick. Exactly the sort of anorakness the world needs.

Elvis' early days were fine, but a fat boy in a jump suit playiong casinos in Las Vegas ffs.

He shoulda done like Buddy Holly did - died young and preserved his image.

Hard one for me that.......

After years of adoration and a life of excess, popping your clogs on the pan, curling one out eating fried food.

Or........

Dying youngish, on fire and crushed by the Big Bopper?

We wouldn't have The Rockin' Sikh (Swansea' own Peter Singh) then, mun...

Funnily enough, Suspicious Minds was the track that gave a career that was dying on its arse a new life.
A lot to answer for I suppose.

Aye - imagine if he'd died when in the army...

Somehow I don't think the King of rock and roll would have seen action. Just imagine the conversation if he had been ordered to see combat!

Knock ,knock

Major Judkins : "Come in "

In walks Sgt Elvis Presley

Judkins : "Ah Sgt Presley, Stand Easy . Your unit has been rostered to go overseas! "

Presley : " Uh huh Sir , but I have a couple of songs to record !"

Judkins : "Well they can wait until you come back, now get ready to move out !"

Presley : "Uh huh, Yes Sir! May I ask where are we going ? " Elvis salutes

Judkins : Vietnam, Sgt Presley ,Vietnam .

Elvis goes pale and gulps

Presley : " Huh Vietnam! That means one thing ' Mama,I 'm coming home in a box !'

Yes and no, Warwick.

Elvis is the original here, not the others. Don't really care who wrote the song, as with most of his music, it's him that brings the magic.

Good songs and artists, but Elvis is in a different league entirely. Thanks for the videos, though, went very well with chicken masala.
