Oh dear, here's some facts...

Smells Like Teen Spirit...

The biggest selling single to have come out of Seattle...ever.

Nirvana...the biggest grossing act to have come out of Seattle.

Nirvana...the most influential act to have come from Seattle...even today their legacy remains strong in the music industry.

And yet you dismiss this song as if it's nothing... The Soundgarden...really???

Great band but not in the same league...

Well to each his own then.

Just for the record, I like Soundgarden and am saddened by the loss of a talent like Cornell, especially if the death is as reported.

But it's not really a comparison really. Here's a couple to start with:

You seem to be confusing "biggest" with "best".

Nevermind was overly produced, latched onto by those who wanted to bandwagon onto the next big thing.

Bleach utterly smoked Nevermind; appearances in support of that ie Reading were amazing.

Once they blew up due to Bleach, it became the case of mass marketing...

Soundgarden have been way more influential than Nirvana - those "influenced" by Nirvana have generally tried to be clones.

Now, what is Nirvana's legacy? Blistering early concerts, great initial album. Over produced second that made them money. Third album that came across as half-arsed. Singer killing himself.

Dave Grohl has a far greater legacy than Nirvana.

I liked Nirvana, but your 3rd fact is not a fact. Jimi Hendrix influenced Rock N Roll a lot more than Nirvana.

That's not a fact either. It's a subjective opinion.

Can't stand Smells Like Teen Spirit. I understand the impact at the time and to some degree it was needed but definitely hype over substance, which is ironic, and one of the weaker bands of the grunge boom.

I saw them somewhere back in the day in Newport, had freebies, but I don't think it was TJ's. Anyone know where, they were OK live, still very sad news.

Not fussed on any of these bands like Nirvana soundgarden etc i hold them personally responsible for the death of Glam metal, hair metal, sleaze rock etc, etc.!!

The girls dressed down instead of up! Instead of girls wearing nice sexy rock chick gear they all then started dressing like a fookin' mess, baggy trousers and tee shirts etc, basically they all looked like Darran !

Anyway, RIP regardless.

Geoff Tate an amazing singer..

He was in his prime which would have been the first Mindcrime album. The earlier EP was pretty good too.

Their output fell off the cliff pretty quickly after Mindcrime. Empire was ok... other stuff meh. Mindcrime II just flattered to deceive, rtrying to go back to the panache of the first Mindcrime. Only Dio being in it redeemed that second one.

Dio's cameo in the Mindcrime sequel still makes me feel warm inside.
