Just picked up on "down to the river to pray"

Intensely powerful about sinning, redemption and baptism

Is it hypocritical for an atheist to enjoy

Art is art regardless of the lyrics. You can appreciate anything, I appreciate the art and poetry of much work based on faith, be it song, poetry, paintings, architecture etc. I happen to believe the ideology is incorrect, and possibly dangerous with the wrong people interpreting it, but I can't disagree that some fine pieces were created from it, mainly due to its pervasive nature in the culture the time they were created.

One of my favourite albums is deeply rooted in gospel music, and I don't think you could be less of a believer than myself......

Love this song, puts the hairs up all over me.

The Album is "There WIll be a Light" by Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Edit: Also there is a "Live at the Apollo" album too, which is the same thing, but live recording. Excellent album too.

Much of modern music is rooted in 40s and 50s black gospel quartets.

Some of the greatest music ever made. I've been an atheist since I stopped believing in Santa Claus.

"Live at the Hot Club de France" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe is currently the album of choice at the moment.

Interesting lady for her time.
