Truly brave men, some not much older than kids.

The fallen will be turning in their graves at whats happening in our country at the moment.

This always makes me think of the Dieppe Raid or the"forgotten D-Day" as it's sometimes called which happened in 1942 - and which Churchill pushed for and which turned out to be an unmitigated disaster.

Spearheaded by Canadian infantry, mostly in their late teens, and never having seen any war before, almost a 1,000 of them were almost immediately obliterated by heavy German machine gun fire as soon as the fronts of their landing craft went down - terrified and enraged by the carnage around them, they were shot to pieces before they could even use their weapons.

It's the details of these disasters which always stick in my mind - like the scores (or was it 100s?) of American soldiers who died months before D-day, during a botched training exercise for it off the Devon or Dorset coast.

Or the horrible deaths of the many - and this is also a little known botch up - who also died before they could get into a fight, because the fronts of their landing craft went down too soon, they entered the water too quickly, and, unable to release their heavy back packs, were dragged down by the weight and drowned.

Bloody grim.

There was a minute's silence in work today for the 7 victims of the London Bridge terror attack, but no mention was made - and nobody seemed to have any awareness of D-day.

4,500 died on the beaches in the first day.

Brave men who deserve our unending gratitude and respect.

One of the saddest episodes of the whole over lord operation for me is the exercise tiger disaster.. More men died than died on Utah beach on d day, yet they went unmentioned and unrecognized for so long.

Young American men a long way from home.

Grim indeed, Sherpa.

That's the incident I was referring to in the third paragraph of my post above.

http://www.exercisetigermemorial.co.uk/ken-small

for me its "ordinary" guys like the late Ken Small doing extraordinary things who should be applauded and recognised for their achievements in ensuring these men are remembered.

Like the WFA who raised money and arranged the mametz memorial, in 1987 when asked to make a contribution the politicians didn't want to know. Last year at the centenary with BBC and ITV cameras there, you couldn't get near the dragon for politicians. (except for Alun cairns - he couldn't be arsed to turn up.)

Edit
Ken Smalls book on the subject, I haven't read it, but good reviews on amazon.

Yeah I remember that from last year I think.
They stencilled 9000 body shapes on the beach 1 for every fallen man(hero). Brings home the enormity of it all.
