Fans Need To Keep Behind The Team
Fans Need To Keep Behind The Team

Although the headline of this story might seem to some to be "stating the bleeding obvious" as the old saying goes, the truth is that we as supporters need to be focused on what is needed of us.

Nigel Atkins seems the sort of manager that is keen on acronyms, we know that he loves a good phrase having talked of getting on buses and grabbing oars and rowing in the right direction, so its a fair bet he loves a good acronym as well.

A popular one in sporting circles would be T-E-A-M which for those of you who havent heard it stands for Together Everyone Achieves More and as glib as it might sound, its actually a very accurate one for football club's as to achieve their goals they do need everyone on the bus and that includes the supporters as well as the players.

The main job for the fans tommorrow will be to keep the team going, but perhaps more importantly its not what they say but what they dont say that will be crucial, by that I mean not putting more pressure on the team if things arent going as well as we would have hoped.

There is nothing that puts more pressure on a player than audible sighs and comments from the crowd when a chance is missed, a pass goes astray or a good crossing opportunity is put way byond the goal and into the stands, this makes a player nervous about doing it again, its certain players that seem to get this, Rickie Lambert for instance could clear the TV Screen in the Northam with a penalty and would barely get a mumble whilst certain other players will hear it if they so much as put the ball out for a throw in when the crowd thinks they could have done more, the key to winning tommorrow is making sure that we dont put pressure on some of these players, Im sure that we all know the individuals who are most likely to get this stick, its often not direct abuse, but just the feeling that emulates from the crowd.

So we have to back all the players, even if they arent our favourites, keep roaring them on, anyone who sits passively and watches this game is wasting a seat, yes we all support the team in our own ways, some of us like to stand in the Northam and sing and chant whilst some of us prefer a more sedate experience, but even those in the posher seats can give the team words of encouragement and even though it might not sound much it all adds up.

Whatever some would say, the crowd can be the 12th man and it does urge players on, it helps them get that extra bit of adrenalin and energy, the unseen things that change football games and why sometimes a lowly team gets a result against the best, we need to make sure that situation doesnt happen here and a noisy partizan crowd is one big help to the team to ensure that the result goes the way of the form book.

So the message is clear, when the team comes out its 90 minutes (plus injury time) of full support, whatever the score we keep behind the team, keep the noise going and we done let any negative vibes, be it against certain players in our own team or filters of the score from Upton Park work against them.

If we the supporters play our part then there is no reason why the players wont play theirs and by 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon we will be back in the Premier League

Why not join the Covenrty fans in their chants SISU out and why not giving huge applauds to their team and supporters just before kick-off? Our sympathy would be totally authentic (as we all know what would have been if SUSI had taken Saints back in 2007 and we have fresh experience of third tier life) - but on the other hand this sympathy could play a tiny part in discouraging their young players harm us. Let's start with condolences and finish with a party - tomorrow we should show the scent of predators flowing from all of us - players to stands - from kick off till the last second.

Over the whole season I've been eagerly reading Nick's views and although undoubtedly overcritical in some respects, Nick is absolutely right when urging us to be 110% behind the team. If Saints are to behave like a top force, fans should also have game plans and stick to them next season.

Nick, thanks for the wonderful job you're doing here! Hope it continues.

Completely agree Nick, as I posted earlier in the week we expect the players to give it everything in pursuit of victory so it's not unreasonable to expect the fans to do the same. If we're being held at 0-0 or fall a goal behind, the crowd needs to encourage even more.

I remember a Liverpool v Saints match at Anfield in 1990, a Jimmy Case goal put us 2-1 ahead in the second half, this was the cue for an absolute crescendo of noise from the home fans getting behind their team and it worked as the Reds came back and beat us 3-2. We can do that too. The crowd does make a difference and let nobody be in any doubt about it.

thanks for the kind comments, criticism should be reserved for discussion on message boards, at the game we should be completely behind the team and all who are playing in it
