Has Kenny Delivered In The January Sales?

Despite our barnstorming start to the season, over the festive period the little cracks in the makeup of the squad have widened into a chasm equivalent to the gap between Sid Hooper's world and Planet Earth, and it has become clear to all that four or five players were needed to plug the gaps and provide some much needed competition (I'm looking at you Ricketts!)

Hitting the ground running in the transfer window became pretty much essential then, and quite possibly the biggest test of Kenny's mettle and will to progress as a manager to boot. So, has he managed to silence those who doubted his willingness to back his judgement with cash or do question marks still remain?

In order of signing:

The Definites

Tom Williams - Gillingham fans hate him. Two assists and some respectable performances in his first couple of games have made me appreciate just why league football hasn't really caught on in Kent. A very sweet left foot allied to a respectable workrate and handy versatility make Kenny's first signing in January a good addition to the squad. It's nice to have competition for Sammy too.

Leon Knight - The biggest shock of the lot. An absolute bargain purchase from Brighton, who's fans also by and large detested him (anyone else see a theme developing?), scorer of a hatrick within 30 minutes of making his debut, a deadly proven goal poacher who for £125,000 could well be the acquisition that will propel us to the Championship. This signing has to go down as a potential masterstroke. Shame on anyone who doubted that Kenny would want to bring in a titchy striker like him. Ahem.

Steven Watt - Now this one is very interesting. Possibly the dominant centre half we've been missing since day one of the season. A highly respectable Chelsea pedigree and a reputation as "Terry-esque" point toward a player of immense potential understandably squeezed out of Stamford Bridge by the Russian revolution. If he's as good as I hope he can be, and half as good as the last youngster we took a chance on from the West London club, we'll have signed a very good player indeed.

The Maybes

Darren Way - I really hope this one does actually come off. A tenacious midfielder with good vision and impressive use of the ball and who played an integral role in monstering our midfield last season, he could be a prefect partner for Roberto in the centre of the park. Huw Jenks has announced that we're close to a deal, but then so did Neville Chamberlain. I'll keep my fingers crossed anyway.

Rory Fallon - I'm not convinced. We're still apparently in the hunt for the Swindon frontman, but the price we're offering for a player out of contract in the summer is crazy. After checking out his goals on the OS I'm a little bit more optimistic about what he could offer us, but at that price he'd have his work cut out from the off.

The If-onlys

Grant Holt - Grrrrrrrrrrrr! You chase a guy for the best part of eighteen months, you finally get to a position where you can offer him terms, and then he decides he's too scared to venture south of Birmingham. Then you see the little shit snapped up by Nottingham bloody Forest about two days later and end up being MOTM on his debut. Kenny must be spitting feathers. Valiant effort to finally sign him though.

Brian Stock - Sneaked in under the radar a little bit. A £120,000+ offer made and accepted for him, only to be turned down by the player in favour of a move to Championship Preston. Can't blame him for that, another good offer and statement of intent from us.

And in conclusion……

A good months work from Kenny IF we can get Darren Way's signature on the dotted line. We've strengthened in every area of the park, and added some real quality upfront. Also encouraging to see us making some serious offers of over £300,000 for other teams star players, possibly suggesting that lessons have been learned at board level?

The signature of Way, and hopefully another striker (on loan will do), and Kenny can pat himself on the back for a job well done.
