Roberto Believes Tottenham Were Wrong
Roberto Believes Tottenham Were Wrong

There is probably a degree of irony that today's paper has Roberto singing the praises of Juande Ramos - he was sacked yesterday

Thankfully with the reports that Harry Redknapp is about to be appointed we will be saved the Western Mail reporting of their interest in Martinez - fast becoming one of the hottest properties in English management.

Speaking though before the news broke last night, Martinez believed that Spurs should stick with Ramos despite them having their worst start to the season ever.

The North London club have their relegation six pointer with Bolton this afternoon having found themselves rooted to the foot of the Premiership table in a position that only one club has ever escaped relegation from.

Martinez told News of the World "Juande Ramos will turn it around at Spurs, I've got no doubt about that.  He is one of the best managers in European football.  He's definitely the best man for the job.

"The problem at Spurs isn't the manager, it's finding the right group of players to take them forward.   Juande hasa very impressive CV.  He's a special manager with many outstanding qualities.

"In my opinion he belongs in the top group of managers in the European game.  Spurs would be making a huge mistake if they didn't support him right now.

"Juande is in a difficult situation because he has lost Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane - his two best players for the last three years.  He's working with a lot of new players and they need time to adapt.

"Juande won the UEFA Cup twice in Seville and took them to third in La Liga.   In Spain they are saying they would love to have him back and that speaks volumes about his reputation there.  He's a great man manager and there's nobody better in Europe than him when it comes to adapting tactis for a game.

"He also has common sense - something that is missing at Spurs at the moment.  People have to be realistic.  Keane and Berbatov were huge losses and it's going to be hard to replace them straight away.

"For me it's clear what Spurs' problems are.  They have brought in quality players with great reputations - but they're not ready for the british game yet.  They are not ready to win Premier League games because they haven't had the time to adapt.

"Juande is an experienced manager and I'm sure he will come up with a winning formula."

No doubt the name of Martinez will be linked with the Portsmouth job.
