Saints V Burnley The Verdict
Saints V Burnley The Verdict
Monday, 27th Apr 2009 10:37

It was the saddest day in almost 60 years as Saints were relegated.

Lets be blunt Saints have been relegated, not because of a ten point deduction, but because they have failed to take their chances and been found wanting defensively all season.

To remind Saints fans of this fact, they squeezed all their shortcomings into 90 minutes, defensive frailties abounded, one on ones weren't taken and to crown it all  David McGoldrick missed yet another penalty.

It was a game Saints should have won, they certainly looked up foor it and the game should have been dead and buried long before the break, however the occasion clearly weighed heavily on the players minds and in the end they did well to hang on for a point.

Kelvin Davis was perhaps a deserved player of the season, but their second goal epitomised our season and our inability to deal with crosses into the box, and indeed the six yaard box, Davis may be the best shot stopper in the division, he may be the best keeper for a one on one, but he has a big weakness and thats his failure to be able to command his box and in this league thats the one thing a keeper needs to be able to do.

Some would say thats harsh on the keeper, but the truth of the matter is we need to make frank assesments of where we have gone wrong and only Charlton and Watford have conceded more than us, defensively we have been poor from the opening day to the last.

Ironically enough Burnley themselves have only conceded six less than us and if we had taken our chances and concentrated then surely they should have actually been a lot nearer in the goals conceded, the big difference between them and us though is goals scored, they have netted 23 more than us and thats why they sit in a play off place.

The post mortem is now over and we have to look to the future, we have nothing to play for now, so lets look to next season, I would like Tommy Forecast to be given a go at Forest alongside Zoltan Liptak, lets find out if they are good enough for next term, likewise Romain Gasmi, we have to look to the future now and not the past.
