Monk - We Need To Show The Fight They Did
Saturday, 15th Mar 2014 18:42

Swansea manager Garry Monk was bemoaning the fact that his side did not take their first half chances when he looked back on the performance but admitted that simply West Brom wanted it more than his side on a massively disappointing afternoon at the Liberty.

The Swans took the lead in the second minute thanks to Roland Lamah's strike but that was the only really high point of the afternoon after a series of missed chances gave West Brom hope and one of the worst second half performances of the season saw the Swans throw away that vital lead and leave them looking very nervously over their shoulders at the sides that sit below them.

West Brom were a side at the start of the game devoid of confidence and wins but left the Liberty celebrating an away success and a win that gave them a real fighting chance of avoiding the drop and gave Pepe Mel his first win in charge.

The Swans for the second home game running threw away a first half lead with a poor second half performance and now have to look at games away at Everton and Arsenal to try and get something against the odds thanks to their poor home form.

“In the second-half, we came out very sloppy - our passing and touches were poor, and we invited them on to us." Monk said after the game

“Unfortunately, the second goal in these games is always crucial. They got it and it gave them the impetus going forward.

“You could see that West Brom were scrapping for their lives. Our side will have to match that will to win every match now.

“Before any tactics or anything else, how much you want to win is the key."

And the answer to that based on today's performance is not very much it seems as we gave away possession far too easily and definitely backed out of 50/50 challenges against a West Brom side that - to be accurate - are not very good but have a desire to win which is what Monk is clearly right on.

He is also right to say that if we can match that desire then we will be okay but it will take a massive step change in the attitude of some players to match that desire with several looking disinterested and certainly not showing any urgency to try and get the results that we need.

“If you have them on ropes, but don’t knock them out, you are always open to them getting back into the match — and that was exactly what happened" Monk added.

Quite why in the last two games we have seen such a marked difference between the first half and second must be the biggest worry to any Swans fan and that has to change in the upcoming home games in particular as our safety is still in our hands and we need to make sure we capitalise on that.

Plenty of work to be done on the training ground me thinks
