Ben - Time To Stand Up And Be Counted
Tuesday, 18th Mar 2014 06:18

We said it after the weekend defeat to West Brom and now Ben Davies is repeating the words of the fans when he called on his Swans team mates to stand up and be counted as they look to secure the points that will see them steer themselves clear of the relegation zone.

The Swans threw away a half time lead on Saturday to lose to one of their relegation rivals leaving them staring at successive away trips to Everton and Arsenal where the pressure has now increased ahead of these two difficult trips.

A win over West Brom - and one against Crystal Palace two weeks back - would have seen the Swans comfortably clear of the dreaded 18th place in the Premier League but instead they now face nine matches to ensure their safety for a fourth successive Premier League season.

Much criticism was aimed at the squad after the weekend defeat with accusations of a lack of effort and no desire to fight particularly after they had dominated the first half as they had done against Palace.

But this time around it was worse as not only did they throw away the great chance of a win they allowed West Brom into the game to such a level that a late winner allowed the Baggies the chance to close the gap on the Swans as anywhere up to ten sides battle it out to avoid being one of the three teams that will occupy the relegation spots come the end of the season in May.

Defender Ben Davies believes that the defeat now means that the Swans have to take something from the double header away trip with Everton first up at Goodison Park on Saturday before the rearranged trip at the Emirates next Tuesday night.

Those two games last season yielded four points and two clean sheets for the Swans and what would we all give for that to be a repeat this time around before our next home game against Norwich at the end of the month.

“We are in a relegation fight and I think we’ve known that for the last couple of games." Ben said

“We’ve got to stand up now and be counted and really fight for every point in this league.

“We knew where we were before the game and we’ve got no excuses to fall back on. We’re confident as a group of players that we can get out of this, but things don’t get handed to you.

“We’ve got to stand up, put the performances in and show why we’re good enough to be here. We’ve got two tough games now and we’ve got to get something from them.”

Ben's words are absolutely spot on and we have to believe that the words will be yielded in the performances to come as we know that the squad has the quality to dig us out of trouble we now just have to back that with the performances that we need.
