Leon Praises Team Character
Wednesday, 26th Mar 2014 08:15

Leon Britton joked after the game that he would not be claiming the goal that earned the Swans a point at the Emirates but he was very praising of the character shown by the team in coming back to earn that point.

Battle and character have been two attributes that have been seen plenty in Leon's time at the club and last night those traits were strong in the whole team as they earned themselves a vital point against a side that had title ambitions at the start of the night.

Those ambitions have probably ended after the result but it has done the world of good for the Swans who moved one step closer to Premier League safety on the back of an excellent result.

Five points now separate them from the bottom 3 as the season closes in on its finishing straight and with Norwich next up at the Liberty on Saturday then that gap could be almost impossible to close if we can grab the three points there as well.

“I don’t think I’ll be claiming the goal,” joked Britton. “I went through on goal, there was a ricochet and the next thing I know, I’m eating grass and the ball’s in the back of the net.

“Overall, I felt we did well. In the first-half, we got the goal and defended very well.

“It was frustrating to concede the equaliser and then just seconds later to find ourselves 2-1 down.

“It is difficult against a side like Arsenal, but we showed great character to keep going."

Nobody is taking anything for granted though at Swansea and the squad are aware that there are still plenty of points left to play for in the fight to avoid the drop. By popular opinion two more wins will see the Swans safe and with Norwich and Hull next up there is no reason why we cannot get those points on the board before Easter

The side should take great confidence from last night's performance and build on that starting on Saturday against the Canaries

“There’s still a lot of points to play for, so we’re not safe yet,” admitted Britton. “But I think the performances over the last few weeks have been good.

“If we can cut out conceding silly goals and the defensive mistakes we make as a team, and continue to play like that, then I’m sure we will get the wins that we need.”

And it is the comment on those silly goals that is the key and on last night's evidence then we have enough defensive stability to ensure that we remain tight at the back whilst keep feeding the chances into Bony up front.

Great character indeed.
