De Guzman Admits Anger At Probert Whistle
Thursday, 27th Mar 2014 06:40

Jonathan de Guzman was the man who was just racing clear of the Arsenal defence when Lee Probert called a half to Tuesday's entertaining 2-2 draw at the Emirates.

De Guzman has been played in by Pablo Hernandez in the last minute of stoppage time when Probert decided that it was time to blow the final whistle and he immediately found himself surrounded by angry Swansea players and officials who were infuriated by the decision to blow the final whistle at that moment.

Whether De Guzman would have gone onto score or not is open for debate but it was a glorious chance for the Swans to record a second successive league win at the Emirates and three vital points as they look to move away from the relegation zone in the Premier League.

Instead they had to settle for a well deserved point thanks to the late Flamini own goal that gave them that point which moved them five points away from the relegation zone.

Speaking to the Western Mail about the decision, De Guzman said “I thought I was through, but the next thing I knew the referee blew the whistle

“I don’t know how much time was left on his clock, but it’s very rare it happens that the ref blows when someone’s on the attack like that.

“Of course I was angry, but regardless it was a great result for us and an important one; it shows we’re capable of doing damage and if we can do it away from home we can do it at home with our fans behind us."

I am still not sure why Probert blew at that point whether he had already decided it was time to blow before De Guzman was sent through I have no idea or because it happened so quick then it may have been the whistle was already in the process of being blown before the ball was played in but it highlighted another poor decision which is just becoming more and more of the norm as decisions are highlighted week on week in the Premier League.

A simple one to resolve this particular decision would be in the future to only allow the final whistle to be blown when the ball goes out of play after the designated time has been played? That works in rugby and would stop the protests and the anger that was seen at the final whistle at the Emirates.

All we can hope now is that it is not season changing (which again we filly accept De Guzman could have missed) and ensure that we gain enough points to stay up with ease starting at the Liberty on Saturday against Norwich
