Bony Double Makes 24
Sunday, 27th Apr 2014 02:20

Wilfried Bony scored his 23rd and 24th goal of the season against Aston Villa at the Liberty to attract more praise from his manager and prove exactly why the Swans shattered their transfer record to sign him last summer.

It was over £12m that the Swans paid out to secure the services of their striker but with 15 goals in the Premier League this season it is easy to see why they were persuaded that such an outlay was worth every penny with his goals vital to seeing us secure Premier League safety for another season.

Bony has scored 14 goals already in 2014 in just 21 appearances and has just five people now ahead of him in the Premier League scoring charts. Only Suarez (30), Sturridge (20), Toure (18), Rooney (17) and Aguero (16) have more goals in the league this season than Wilf but when you compare the vast number of goals scored by their teams compared to ours then it makes the feat all the more remarkable.

When your factor in that the Swans have been in the lower half of the table for the majority of the season and have also had the European games to contend with it has been an amazing season for Bony who surely looks a shoe in to be named player of the year at the awards dinner in just over a week's time.

And with a World Cup on the horizon it will complete an amazing twelve months for the man who topped the scoring charts in Holland last season.

“It’s a great tally and he’s got two more games to score some more,” Swans manager Garry Monk said after his double against Villa.

“I know he wants to take this form into the World Cup and hit the ground running there.

“It’s been difficult given the season Michu’s had but Bony has stepped up to the plate and it’s a shame that we haven’t seen more of them as a pair together.

“You’d like to imagine that a fully-fit Michu and a fully-fit Bony would be a handful for any defence, that’s the only disappointing thing for me.

“But as far as Bony is concerned it’s not just his goals but the way he is.

“He’s a big character around the boys.

“He’s a leader, he works hard and his link-up play and his hold-up play is very good as well.”
