Cheque Books At The Ready

It was interesting to read the reports this morning that stated we had put in a bid (and reportedly had it accepted) for Dutch Under 21 striker Luc Castaignos.

Interesting in that it is a big statement of intent for me for a side that in the last two seasons have used the likes of Itay Shechter and Alvaro Vazquez as back up to their main striker

It always sounds like a stuck record but making a £6.5m move for a backup striker gives you the indication of just how far this club has progressed not just in the last 10 years but since we arrived in the Premier League as we continue to go about our business in the right way and looking at talent that we believe can do a job for us rather than just throwing money at the cause in a desperate belief to make it work.

The potential arrival of Castaignos would certainly fill us with greater optimism than either of the previous incumbents of the backup striker role although I have to confess that some of that is influenced by the size of the reported fee rather than a complete knowledge of the striker in question.

What I can work out though without the need for You Tube videos is that he scored 14 goals last season and is a Dutch Under 21 international which I know means a good pedigree and given the way that other Dutch signings have taken to the division in the past then it seems a good move on the face of it.

Nothing has been confirmed from Swansea today but with reports suggesting that the striker is not due in Wales until next week for talks then that is not surprising. The club have been stung before when saying that fees have been agreed so it is no major surprise that nothing is being mentioned until such point that a deal is finalised - if indeed it ever gets to that stage?

Any move as well though don't forget would be in the middle of Wilfried Bony being linked with a host of clubs - Chelsea becoming the latest after it was reported that he was one of three potential targets for the Blues this summer as they look to grab a striker to accompany Costa next season where they will be wanting to grab at least one trophy having missed out this time around.

Of course the one thing that we don't know on this story is how true the sources are that created it but Sky Sports are crediting their sources with the story and that for me adds some more credence to the discussion although I suspect we are still several days away at least from being able to confirm it.

But nonetheless it means we can continue to speculate on what would be one of the most expensive transfers in Swans history. And for a backup striker...!
